Spoiler alert for And Just Like That… season one.
Sex And The City fans are forever triggered by the breakdown of Carrie and Aiden’s relationship in the original show, and it looks like old wounds are set to be ripped open again in And Just Like That… season two.
For those who may not be familiar with SATC couples, Aiden was the antithesis to Mr Big. He wasn’t a player, he was the guy-next-door—humble, kind and well-meaning. However, one of the enduring issues in his relationship with Carrie was her slight (read: major) obsession with Marlboro Lights.
Aiden swore that he ‘couldn’t date a smoker’ and his attempt to steer Carrie away from the cigarettes ended up being one of the cracks that led to their romance’s ultimate demise.
Enter stage left, footage of John Corbett dressed in an Aiden get up, in a café in New York, little white rolled cigarette between his lips. Surrounded by a busy set and co-stars Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie), Kristin Davis (Charlotte), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) and Sarita Choudhury (Seema), Corbett looks cavalier as the cigarette dances with the words he’s speaking to the women around him.
While John Corbett has smoked in the past (in an interview with Fox News he admitted he used to smoke as a young man), if you look closely at the video the cameras appear to be rolling and the extras appear to be acting.
Could it be that it is Aiden who has finally gotten off his high horse and joined Carrie as a smoker?
A New-York based internet sleuth by the handle @mickmicknyc also got some behind-the-scenes footage of the series being shot, which also included other clips of Aiden, cigarette-in-mouth, hopping into a car.
Naturally, the internet had a lot to say about this revelation, particularly given the fact that smoking is no longer a promoted part of public discourse owing to its major health impacts.
“Aidan would start smoking after the whole world decided it’s lame,” one commented wryly.
“Was that Adian getting in the limo with a CIGARETTE a in his mouth? How ironic,” another added.
Will it be the thing that bonds Carrie and Aiden again after she’s mourned Big’s loss? We can’t help but wonder how the whole story will play out. But for now, we will just have to wait with pricked ears for the next little tidbit to leak.
And Just Like That… season two is will air on May 23, 2023, on Foxtel Now.
