We’re currently in the thick of Farmer Wants A Wife season 16, with all five farmers embracing the experience with open minds and open hearts. Among them is Farmer Alex, the 28-year-old Queenslander who has had his sights set on one woman for almost the entire season.
Alex is the show’s first mushroom farmer, growing gourmet varieties alongside the cattle operation his family runs in Kin Kin. The two businesses are so demanding that he often spends seven days a week on the farm, leaving little room for romance.
Speaking exclusively to marie claire Australia, Alex anticipated my first question before I could even ask it.
After declaring in the first episode that his dream wedding would resemble Bella and Edward Cullen’s, Alex perhaps unknowingly endeared himself to a generation of millennial and Gen Z women still firmly in the icy grip of Twilight‘s blue-tinted melancholy and enduring fantasy of all-consuming love.
For the record, his favourite film is the original Twilight and he’s also a big Robert Pattinson fan.
But while Alex might be a romantic, he admits he wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from the reality dating experience.
“I kept wondering how I was going to form something real with cameras pointed at me from every direction,” he says. “It’s obviously a pretty strange situation. First dates are hard enough as it is, let alone having cameras following you around.”
Thankfully, those nerves didn’t last long.
“I thought it was going to be harder than it actually was, but I settled into it pretty quickly.”
That became especially true once he met Eddy. From their sweet golf-themed speed date in episode one, viewers could sense an immediate connection between the pair. Episode two only reinforced that impression, with Alex choosing Eddy for his coveted 24-hour date before the remaining contestants arrived on the farm.
According to Alex, the pair quickly found their rhythm despite the unusual circumstances.
“Eddy was a natural,” he says. “Everything that happened on that speed date, and then during the 24-hour date, especially the way we handled the experience together, made it feel really beautiful.”
In fact, when it came time to choose who would join him for the special 24-hour date, Alex says the decision was surprisingly straightforward.
“When I picked, there was no question in my mind that I was choosing Eddy for that 24-hour date,” he reveals. “I was really happy with the five ladies I took back to the farm, but Eddy was the clear frontrunner.”
Who Does Farmer Alex Choose?
Ever since their sweet speed date, during which Alex gifted Eddy a necklace, the 28-year-old farmer has made it increasingly clear where his heart lies. Time and again, he’s reassured Eddy of his feelings, even admitting he thinks about her while on dates with the other women.
In last night’s episode, the pair headed to the Kin Kin Bathhouse for a romantic solo date, where Alex revealed he was eager to move beyond their obvious chemistry and deepen their connection.
“So much of our conversations have just been around the fact that we’re infatuated with each other,” he told cameras. “I want to give us the chance to connect on a deeper level.”
Despite the episode’s drama, which saw Rachel discover Eddy’s ‘love letter’ to Alex, our biggest takeaway was just how secure Eddy’s place appears to be.
While the physical chemistry challenge sees Alex choose Rachel for a solo date, the teaser for Sunday’s episode feels like a spoiler, revealing that he’ll make his final choice on Sunday, and from where we’re sitting, it looks very likely that it’ll be Eddy. This felt especially clear after Alex appeared somewhat disappointed when he realised he’d chosen Rachel in the anonymous chemistry challenge, which was conducted blindfolded.

Farmer Alex, 28, is a cattle and mushroom farmer from Kin Kin, Queensland, and the first mushroom farmer to appear on Farmer Wants A Wife. Inspired to enter the industry after watching the documentary Fantastic Fungi, he now helps run a thriving gourmet mushroom business alongside his family’s cattle operation.
After his last serious relationship ended two years ago, the self-confessed romantic is hoping Farmer Wants A Wife will help him find someone to share the life he’s worked so hard to build. While Alex admits his biggest flaw in relationships is being overly focused on work, it’s hardly surprising given he spends much of his time juggling two businesses. The question now is whether he’s finally ready to make space for love alongside life on the farm.

Who Has Farmer Alex Eliminated So Far?
From an original group of eight hopeful romantics, Farmer Alex has narrowed the field to three. But while the eliminations may look straightforward on screen, Alex says making those early decisions was anything but easy.
“You don’t get a lot of time with them [early on],” he explains. “Those speed dates were tough. Sending those three girls home was really hard.”
He admits watching the episodes back has only reinforced that feeling, particularly after seeing Ebony become emotional following her departure.
“That was really rough to see,” he says.
