Chocolate Brown Interiors Are Here To Stay, So Invest In These Pieces

Delicious

When shades of brown in chocolate, cacao and caramel hues first swept runways, it was only a matter of time for the trend to trickle down and begin infiltrating our homes.

The decadent palette was everywhere: from Max Mara’s Spring/Summer 25 runway show in Milan, which saw the shade soften the house’s signature sharp tailoring, to the catwalks of Bottega Veneta, Miu Miu, Ferragamo and more at Fall/Winter Fashion Weeks.

Pantone underscored the trend with the announcement of its Colour Of The Year: Mocha Mousse. And despite it now being over a year on, the new neutral, as it’s been hailed, isn’t going anywhere – particularly when it comes to our homes.

“For years, interiors leaned heavily into cool whites, greys and black accents, which weren’t particularly inviting. There’s something honest and familiar about chocolate brown,” Julia Green, interior stylist, writer and founder of Green House Interiors, tells marie claire Australia

Leading Interior stylist, Kerrie-Ann Jones, echoes this, adding: “It brings warmth, depth and a sense of comfort to a space, while still feeling sophisticated.”

Last prominent in the interiors space in the 1970s, you’d be remiss for thinking chocolate brown’s return is a fleeting fad.

“Like olive green or camel, I think chocolate brown will settle into the role of a modern neutral. We may see different shades evolve over time, from espresso to softer cocoa tones, but the desire for warm, earthy palettes is likely to remain,” Jones assures us.

While the same can’t be said for our wardrobes – given fashion’s short-lived attention span these days – the experts signal an enduring shift in interiors, one marked by comfort and warmth.

“I don’t see chocolate brown as a trend; I see it as part of a much bigger shift back towards natural, earthy interiors,” Green says.

In fact, for those dipping their toe into the trend, the interior stylist recommends leaning into that natural palette.

“I love it with olive green, terracotta, rust and soft clay tones for a warm, earthy palette that feels effortlessly relaxed.”

Neutrals are also an easy starting place, Jones explains: “For a timeless look, combine it with warm whites, oatmeal, linen and natural stone.”

And for something a little bolder?

“For a softer, more contemporary feel, pair chocolate brown with muted sage, dusty pink or buttery tones. These colours provide gentle contrast while allowing the brown to remain the grounding element.”
