If You Loved ‘Euphoria’, You’re Going To Love Netflix’s New Gritty Series

Prepare to binge 'Grand Army'

While we might have to wait a while longer for Euphoria to return to our screens, Netflix heard our cries and ushering in another gritty adult drama to add to our must-watch lists.

Grand Army is adapted from the 2013 play Slut by Katie Cappiello, painting an all-too-real portrayal of the complicated lives of high schoolers today. The original play followed the journey of a 16-year-old named Joey Del Marco after she’s sexually assaulted by three lifelong friends, per Deadline

Set to premiere on October 16, the series stars Odessa A’zion, Odley Jean, Maliq Johnson, Amalia Yoo, and Amir Bageria as students at Brooklyn’s Grand Army High School.

The stories are based on conversations that Cappiello, who in addition to being a playwright is also a theatre educator and an executive producer on Grand Army, has had with students over the many years she’s been teaching.

Grand Army tunnels into a generation that’s raging and rising,” the official show description reads. “Five students at the largest public high school in Brooklyn take on our chaotic world as they fight to succeed, survive, wild out, break free and seize the future.”

The first trailer, released this week, touches on issues such as social justice, school violence, and romance, all set to a saxophone rendition of The Star Spangled Banner.
