Sandra Oh To Star As The First Woman Of Colour In A Male-Dominated Field In Netflix’s ‘The Chair’

Eve is back, but this time, as a university professor

As we eagerly await the return of Killing Eve’s lead detective of the same name—and Villanelle’s show-stopping fashion moments—to return to our screens, Sandra Oh looks to have set her sights on another project where she’s the head of a different profession.

Netflix’s latest offering, The Chair, will see Oh play the revolutionary Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, who earns a new job title: chair of the English Department at Pembroke University. Not only is she the first woman of colour to land the job, but she’s the first female to do so at the university.

What Is The Plot Of Netflix’s The Chair?

Made up of six half-hour episodes, The Chair revolves around Canadian-born professor Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, who has just earned her role as the Chair of the English Department at Pembroke University. As per Tyla, the series’ synopsis reads “Ji-Yoon is faced with a unique set of challenges as the first woman to chair the department, and as one of the few staff members of colour at the university.”

The series will follow Professor Kim’s journey while navigating the highs and lows of her time at the helm of the department. In an image released by Netflix, she receives a warm welcome to her new role by most, with the university paper—aptly named The Pembroke Daily—includes an article announcing Professor Kim’s hiring, declaring that it came “179 years too late”, adding that Kim’s new role was “a last ditch effort” to save a “sinking dip” department.

Who Is Cast In Netflix’s The Chair?

While we know that Sandra Oh (Killing Eve, Grey’s Anatomy) will be leading the cast as Dr. Ji-Yoon Kim, there are several other heavy-hitters keeping her company on the cast list. Joining her is Holland Taylor (Legally Blonde) who is taking on the role of Joan Hambling, Ji-Yoon’s straight talking friend and confidant. As well as, Jay Duplass (The Mindy Project), Nana Mensah (Bonding), Bob Balaban (The Politician) and Everly Carganilla (Yes Day) who stars as Ji-Yoon’s daughter.
