Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Makeup Artist Reveals the Five-Tap Foundation Trick Behind Her Press Tour Skin

We spoke exclusively with Jo Baker, the mastermind behind Daisy Edgar-Jones’ flawless makeup, on exactly how her press tour looks were made

If you’ve been following Daisy Edgar-Jones’ Sense & Sensibility press tour, you’ll have noticed her skin. It’s fresh and lit from within, and her cheeks are flushed the way they would be after a brisk walk across the moors. It isn’t the kind of complexion you’d expect from a matte, long-wear foundation. But that’s exactly what’s behind it.

“I love a durable matte foundation that can be made sheer or buildable to fuller coverage,” says celebrity makeup artist Jo Baker, who has been creating Edgar-Jones’ looks for the tour. Her pick is Estée Lauder Double Wear, “the iconic and always reliable” formula she calls “a cult go-to that I keep on hand.”

“I use my finger to shake the bottle upside down and do about five taps over Daisy’s face,” she explains, “and then softly blend out with a brush into the skincare, which gives me the most modern version of a matte long-wear foundation you could ever have.”

The Brief: A Painterly Portrait

Edgar-Jones plays Elinor Dashwood in Georgia Oakley’s new adaptation of the Jane Austen classic, and she wanted her beauty looks to nod to the period without tipping into costume.

“Daisy wanted to lean into the Sense and Sensibility time-period aesthetic mood,” says Baker. “Almost using a painterly portrait touch to the makeup for the daytime press. So soft eyes, and lots of flushy, blushy feels on cheeks and lips that felt innocent yet also a little heated all at once.”

After dark, things get a little moodier. “For nighttime premieres we have been kicking up the drama but still with soft subtleties,” she says, “bringing some cool smoke tones to the eyes but remaining in the colour palette of the period.”

The Blush Placement That Changes Everything

If there’s one technique worth stealing, it’s where Baker puts the blush. She doesn’t sweep it up toward the temples. She takes it across the bridge of the nose and lower down on the cheeks.

“It makes makeup appear youthful and less makeup-y,” she says. “Skin complexion to look like she ran through a field is the vibe, instead of the typical blush placement of today’s time.”

How To Get The Look At Home

Here’s Baker’s step-by-step for Edgar Jones’ “effortless girl-next-door” look:

  • Skin: Start with your usual skincare, then dot on Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Foundation using the five-tap method above and blend it out with a brush.
  • Cheeks: Use Estée Lauder Futurist BlushMaker Dewy Skin Tint in Skinny Dip. “Using a light, feathery blush brush, I dust it back and forth across the cheeks, bridge of the nose, and I even take the blush a little bit further down for a more modern placement,” Baker says. The result is “a little bit of a heated, flushed, girl-next-door kind of innocence.”
  • Eyes: Use Estée Lauder Essential Eyeshadow Stick in Hazelnut, a no-skill-required stick and “a universal, soft, warm, wearable multi-brown that just brings out the hazel and amber tones of Daisy’s brown eyes.”
  • Lashes: Baker uses her own BakeUp Tarantulash mascara, with “a soft coat on the top and bottom to achieve a doll-eyed lash look.”
  • Lips: Use Estée Lauder Futurist HydraPlump Lip Balm in Clove Cushion. More on that below.

The Lip Balm Edgar-Jones Hasn’t Taken Off

The one product Edgar-Jones herself keeps coming back to is the Futurist HydraPlump Lip Balm.

“One product that I have not been able to live without for this entire Sense and Sensibility press tour has been the Estée Lauder Futurist HydraPlump Lip Balm,” she says. “I think I’ve worn it at every red carpet! It’s the perfect flush of colour and is super hydrating. I honestly love all the shades, but Clove Cushion is my favourite.”

Baker agrees, calling it “absolutely the Daisy go-to.” She also rotates in the shade Sheer Oasis. Both shades are “ultra universal,” she says, and “give lips a plump, juicy, sheer tint that feels modern yet uber cool. A new form of cool-girl nude.”

One heads-up before you buy: “You may be surprised to see that this colour is incredibly dark in person,” Baker says of Clove Cushion, “but once you swipe it on your hand, you will see it is the perfect brown berry sheer tone.”

Sense & Sensibility is in Australian cinemas from 15 October.
