Whenever we think fashion is moving forward, it looks back in order to do so. Showing his spring/summer 2020 collection over the weekend, Alexander Wang proved there’s no better way to take a step into the future than to acknowledge those who have come before.
Hosting an extravagant show in the famous New York Rockefeller Centre, Wang’s touch on tradition and patriotism came in four waves. Paying homage to Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren — three of the most influential American designers in history — Wang’s final hurrah was a nod to the suffragettes. Apart from being retrospectively significant, it was a comment on today, too.
The clothes were inherently Alexander Wang; logos, leather and a monochrome palette reigned supreme, but it was subtle finishings that saw the designer flex his muscles by way of fringing (a touch of Lauren), suede and corduroy. Complete with an all star cast — including SNL star and famous ex boyfriend of Ariana Grande, Pete Davidson, it was a collection to remember. Below, our favourite looks from all four sections.
