Five Expert-Approved Tips To Styling Your Summer Staples During Winter

Because who said your hot girl summer had to come to an end?

If this rain has you reaching for a whole new winter wardrobe, chances are the majority of your cool-weather essentials are already in your closet.

Each year, without fail, many of us will meticulously curate a sophisticated, yet sensible, winter mood board full of inspiration from Fall/Winter fashion month, model-off duty looks and international street style galleries.

Our (virtual) shopping carts get filled to the brim with high-end knitwear and coats to get us through the wet and dreary months ahead. We forgo our summer strappy heels and rug up in *those* colour block scarves, loafers and boots.

We cover up our legs and shoulders, layer cable knits upon cashmere and forget about all the amazing purchases we made during the summertime.

But this year, we’re vowing to kick those bad habits and continue to rock our favourite Spring/Summer looks, even in the depths of winter.

Because what’s the point of owning clothes if we can’t wear them?

Curious how to follow suit and style your summer staples during the cooler months? Keep reading below for our five expert-approved tips to get the most longevity out of your summer clothes.

Puff It Up

Inflatable fashion is having a moment. From the runways of Poster Girl, Dion Lee and even Danish label Stine Goya, silhouettes are looking a little more blown up than usual thanks to the appearance of puffer jackets and moon boots.

As a key Fall/Winter 2022 trend, combining your sultry, skin tight summer tanks with an oversized, aerated jacket or shoe (or both!) is a sure fire winner. If you’re looking for something a little more reserved, simply layer with your lightweight or bright coloured summer knits for an effortless, on the go and off-duty look

Keep Things Tight

The chokehold the monogram tights had on the fashion community in 2020 was second to none. Now, thanks to the cooling temperatures, they’re having a comeback. While hosiery should be a staple in any wardrobe, buying into the luxury stocking market is the best investment you can make for taking your summer looks trans-seasonal.

Although the logo laden variations are always a classic, graphic stockings in psychedelic colourways and unique prints are also on the rise. However, classic swiss dot tights or even fishnets can make the perfect layering item. Simply pair under your favourite cocktail dress, throw on your preferred evening jacket and you’re good to go.

All About Layers

The key to any trans-seasonal wardrobe is layers—seriously, the more versatile options the better.

This summer we saw an influx of waistcoats and vests, so rather than purchasing a whole host of warm knitted options, layer with a high neck bodysuit or graphic long sleeve. This principle can be applied for almost any option.

That silk slip or flowing maxi dress you bought for your balmy long lunches? Pop a peter pan collared top underneath and you’ll be gearing to go. If it works for Alexa Chung it works for us.

Other layering pieces we’re loving this season are the ultra chic—albeit not very practical in terms of keeping you warm—bolero or the classic cable knit and blazer combo in unexpected colourways.

Dress It Down

Dresses, especially the ones with thigh-grazing hemlines, can double as a shirt for the cooler months.

Whether it’s an asymmetrical shoulder, halterneck detail or an eye-catching pattern, styling your favourite summer dresses this way is a fool proof method to ensure you get long lasting wear out of your items.

Simply tuck into your favourite pair of jeans or slouchy suit pants and you’re good to go. The best thing? No one will know

However, if you’re wanting to keep your dresses on display, you can always forgo the tuck and simply layer with a complimentary pair of slacks underneath.

It’s a look pioneered by London-based fashion designer Molly Goddard, who often styles her signature puff-sleeve, Peter Pan collar, baby doll dresses with denim and even track pants. With a celebrity fan base that boasts Adwoa Aboah and Jodie Comer, you know you’ll be in good company.

Invest In Timeless Winter Staples

The best styling tip for transitioning your summer wardrobe to winter is to ensure your cool-weather arsenal is complete with timeless essentials that can take you from season to season.

Rather than buying into the latest craze, fad or look du jour, it’s best to have a select few good quality and durable pieces that you can pair with your summer staples.

Think: a fantastic blazer in a neutral colourway or classic print like houndstooth or pinstripe, a long coat that is begging to be layered and a variety of slouchy pants in cool colourways. We’re loving lime greens, sunburnt oranges and bold pinks.
