The Ton is assembling for Bridgerton season four as dear gentle readers settle in for a new love story to unfold between Benedict and newcomer, Sophie Baek.

Despite each new season bringing a fresh love affair, there are many plotlines that form the undercurrent of continuing drama throughout the series. The biggest of which has centred on the identity of Lady Whistledown, who we all know to be Penelope Featherington.

Considering there are eight Bridgerton kin to keep up with, it’s easy to forget where we left each important character ahead of the new season. Fret not, we have you covered with an important recap on season three below.

How Did Bridgerton Season Three End?

Bridgerton season three ends with Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton married and publicly united. In the finale, Penelope reveals that she is Lady Whistledown, the anonymous gossip writer behind the ton’s most scandalous newsletter. Rather than facing social ruin, Penelope is accepted by Queen Charlotte and allowed to continue publishing under her own name.

How Did Penelope Reveal She’s Lady Whistledown?

Penelope reveals she is Lady Whistledown during a public ball, where she addresses the Ton directly. She admits to writing the gossip column, acknowledges the harm it caused, and takes responsibility for her actions. Her confession is, understandably, met with shock, but Queen Charlotte ultimately spares her from punishment, recognising Penelope’s growth and granting her permission to continue writing openly. The Royal loves a little gossip, after all.

What Happened With Eloise In Season Three?

By the end of season three, Eloise Bridgerton reconciles with former BFF, Penelope, after their falling-out earlier in the series.

Having struggled with her place in society, Eloise chooses to step away from London’s social expectations and travel to Scotland alongside her sister Francesca. Despite the distance, it’s still expected viewers will see plenty of Eloise in the upcoming season, with both her and sister Francesca’s love stories yet to fully play out.

What Happened With Francesca In Season Three?

Francesca Bridgerton’s storyline ends with her marriage to John Stirling, the Earl of Kilmartin. Unlike other Bridgerton romances, their relationship is quiet, tender, and deeply respectful – it also hasn’t followed the pattern of receiving its own season. Fans of the book will already know that’s because there’s far more ahead for Francesca and her delicate heart.

In the finale, Francesca leaves London to begin a new life in Scotland with her husband, marking a significant emotional shift for the Bridgerton family and setting the foundation for her more complex story in future seasons, perhaps with John’s cousin, Michaela Stirling…
