Poor Farmer Jason!

I think our collective hearts broke a little during last night’s episode of Farmer Wants A Wife, when a third contestant decided to head home after realising country life wasn’t quite the fairytale she’d signed up for.

In last night’s episode, Beth made the heartbreaking decision to leave Farmer Wants A Wife after a call from home made her realise she needed to be with her six-year-old daughter.

The 28-year-old vet from Western Australia had quickly formed a connection with Farmer Jason. After hitting it off during the speed dates, Jason had even chosen Beth to return to his dairy farm in Coolabunia, Queensland, a day ahead of the other women.

The pair shared a romantic evening that ended with a kiss, making her departure all the more bittersweet.

“It’s important that you know that this is nothing to do with you,” Beth tearfully told him. As a brief aside, can we all take a moment to appreciate the impeccable yellow eyeshadow that somehow remained flawless through the tears?

Like the gem he is, Jason met the news with nothing but understanding. “You don’t need to say sorry,” he reassured her.

Reflecting on her decision, Beth later told cameras, “I have to leave behind the chance of finding love.”

So what about the other two women who fled the farm?

The first blow came on Sunday night, courtesy of Jessie, who decided she couldn’t continue the journey and head back to the farm.

The remaining women, who had just arrived at Jason’s property, broke the news to a visibly devastated farmer who, like a knight in shining armour, hopped on his noble steed (in his Mitsubishi ute) and drove off to check that she was okay.

When he arrived, Jessie explained that it wasn’t Jason she was struggling with, but the setup itself.

“Under different circumstances, I would have loved to have gotten to know you,” she told him. “It’s just not the right environment for me. I feel terrible that I’ve wasted your time.”

Honestly, good on Jessie for calling it when she knew, rather than dragging things out for the sake of television.

Still, Jason was clearly disappointed. Returning to the farm, he admitted the situation had played directly into one of his biggest fears throughout the process: that the women simply wouldn’t want a life on the farm.

“Sometimes you think, are you good enough? Why aren’t you good enough?” he reflected. “You start second-guessing yourself.”

Thankfully, there were still four women waiting back at the farm, and Jason attempted to shake off the disappointment by taking Jessica on a solo date.

The pair headed into nearby Kingaroy for a cocktail-making session.

“I think it’s gonna be a good date,” Jason said beforehand. “She seems like a fun, bubbly person and I find that really attractive.”

Jessica, however, remained unconvinced about the realities of country life.

“This is what I don’t understand,” she said. “Where I live now, I can walk to a bar, have a few cocktails and walk home. Your problem is, living here in woop woop, you’ll never be able to just walk to a pub and walk home.”

Fair point. Though perhaps not groundbreaking insight for someone who voluntarily signed up to date a farmer.

“I’ll have to see how princessy she gets,” Jason laughed to the cameras.

Despite Jessica’s reservations, the date appeared to go well enough. The pair then returned to the farm for dinner with the other women, where Jason was expected to send someone home.

Jessica admitted the uncertainty was getting to her.

“It feels like a rollercoaster of emotions,” she said. “I had the opportunity to get to know Jason one-on-one and now I’m sitting around the table with all the other ladies not knowing what Jason is thinking. That’s the worst part.”

Seemingly feeling tense over the impending decision, she encourages Jason to make a decision and “rip it off like a Band-Aid”.

Before revealing his decision, Jason pulled Logan aside for a private chat, with Jessica now increasingly frustrated by his growing connections with the other women.

“I don’t like it when I don’t get what I want,” she admitted in a voiceover. “I’m a busy girl and if he doesn’t choose me, it feels like a bit of a waste.”

She added, “I’m feeling a little bit impatient and I just want to know tonight’s outcome and who’s being sent home.”

In a twist that, frankly, made perfect sense given he was already one woman down, Jason revealed he wouldn’t be sending anyone home.

“Aw, thank you, Jason,” Jessica replied, dripping with sarcasm.

She then ripped off her microphone, stormed out of the room and slammed the door behind her before telling fellow contestant Poppy, “I knew it. I’m just gonna go.”

Just like that, Jason found himself down another woman!

“I’m worried and overwhelmed by it all,” a bewildered Jason told producers.

Later, the usually optimistic farmer admitted the night’s events had taken a toll.

“I was so full of hope,” he said sadly. “I’m wondering what I’m doing wrong.”

Jason’s sweet, utterly perplexed face almost sent me over the edge. Honestly, I was just as confused watching from my living room. Here’s hoping the women left in the running can restore his faith in the process and deliver the happy ending he deserves.
