The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) are unfolding at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theatre today, and there’s no shortage of watercooler-worthy moments to discuss, but none had viewers in a chokehold more than the debut of Taylor Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ music video.
Swift confirmed her attendance at this year’s ceremony following the surprise announcement of her extended album release, The Life Of The Showgirl: The Encore, before also revealing she would debut the video during the show.
Ahead of the VMAs, the singer gave a short teaser of the video featuring Hollywood stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson, which only heightened the anticipation for its release.
Johnson also made a surprise appearance at the VMAs to present her close friend Swift with the Artistic Director Honour.

The official music video for Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ made its world premiere during the 2026 MTV VMAs in Los Angeles on September 27th (U.S. time).
It’s expected the music video will be released on platforms such as YouTube shortly after the ceremony. It’s currently available to watch in Australia on Spotify and Apple Music
Decoding ‘Patient Zero’ Music Video
Taylor Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ music video has officially been released following its VMAs debut, and it was worth every second of the wait.
The video opens on Johnson and Swift standing in front of a grave, dressed in identical black and grey clothes. The parallels continue as we realise Swift’s character has lived the life Johnson’s character is playing out now. The same parties, the same gowns and even the same engagement ring.
Slowly, it becomes clear Farrell’s character is up to something sinister, potentially poisoning his new wife. It all comes to a head at a glittering party where Cara Delevigne makes a fleeting cameo before Johnson collapses and makes a scene as though drunk, despite only having one wine.
Flashback to Farrell’s first wife, Swift, and we realise he’s responsible for her death before the video comes to an end with Johnson revealing the tombstone we opened on: “Here lies beloved wife and daughter, gone too soon.”
The storyline is eerily similar to thriller novels Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn and Verity by Colleen Hoover, the adaptation of which Johnson is set to appear in. Could the song make a surprise appearance on the film’s soundtrack? We’ll see.
Swift first teased the music video during her surprise SUV-themed Emmys’ skit with the show’s cast, where she turned to the camera and recited a series of seemingly unconnected words: “Saccharide. Ares. From the Vineyard. North or South”.
While many pointed to the third letter in each word, spelling out ‘Encore’ others have drawn lines between Saccharide (another word for sugar), hinting at Colin Farrell’s hit show and ‘North or South’ relating to the states of Dakota (like Johnson).
