Taylor Swift has proved once again it’s her world, and we’re just living in it. The Life Of A Showgirl singer has this morning announced a surprise new single titled ‘Patient Zero’.
For the Swifties paying close attention to her every move, the announcement of a new single may not be a surprise at all. In fact, fans believe Swift has been dropping easter eggs about the new track for seven months. The most recent clue came in Swift’s cameo at the Emmy Awards with SUV star and award show host, Mariska Hargitay.
For that very same reason, the meaning behind ‘Patient Zero’ is already being dissected for any clue as to what a new single could signal for Swift’s next move.
Is ‘Patient Zero’ Part Of A New Album?
Sorry Swifties, but the release of ‘Patient Zero’ does not mean we’re getting TS13… yet. The new single is part of TS12, The Life Of A Showgirl, and is being called an ‘encore’ to that album.
‘Patient Zero’ was hinted at throughout the release of Life Of A Showgirl, including a poster in the ‘Opalite’ music video that read “patient for the encore” as well as Taylor frequently swapping out the letter ‘O’ for the number ‘0’.
What Does Taylor Swift’s ‘Patient Zero’ Mean?
Theories are already emerging about the meaning behind Taylor Swift’s new single, and they span from an impending TS13 album announcement to an infamous LA Times article about the singer.
As TikTok user SwiftlySungStories points out, the photograph from the announcement post appears to show the singer in a Mausoleum, dressed in black, the colour of mourning. A quick look at the redesigned Taylor Swift website also shows Mausoleum-esque signs, including a small circle shape that features on crypts as a screw detail.
The thinking is that this ‘encore’ could symbolise the death of a showgirl, ergo marking the end of Taylor’s showgirl era.
Another popular theory is that the name ‘Patient Zero’ comes from an LA Times article. In 2024, columnist Amy Kaufman penned an article dissecting the cultural influence of Swift’s romance with her now-husband, Travis Kelce.
In the piece, Kaufman wrote: “Taylor Swift is patient zero for emotional contagion.
A coincidence? When it comes to Swifts, there’s no such thing. Given their recent nuptials, some believe the new song will be a love song dedicated to Kelce.
The Life Of A Showgirl is famously about a period of Swift’s life when she was endlessly touring but also falling for Kelce as their relationship began. Perhaps this song marks the true end of her single life and, subsequently, the showgirl era.
