Who Is Thabo Bester?
Before Netflix made him a household name, Thabo Bester was already a figure of infamy across South Africa. In the early 2010s, whispers of a charming young man offering modelling contracts to unsuspecting women had already begun to circulate. But, behind the shiny promises of photo shoots and fast-tracked careers was something far darker.
On the surface, he came across as another ambitious young man with a silver tongue,” one journalist on the series notes. “But the pattern was unmistakable, every interaction was calculated, every promise a setup.”
Bester’s scheme was simple, but devastatingly effective. He would reach out to women online, presenting himself as a well-connected talent scout who could open doors into the fashion industry. Meetings arranged under the guise of opportunity quickly spiralled.
In 2012, his crimes culminated in the brutal murder of his girlfriend, model Nomfundo Tyhulu. The case shocked South Africa, not only because of the violence, but because it revealed just how carefully Bester had been crafting his persona for years.
Judge Hanlie Muller, who presided over the trial, described Bester as a manipulative and dangerous individual, noting how he used his charm and deception to exploit victims.
The conviction cemented his reputation as one of South Africa’s most notorious criminals, a man capable of both cold calculation and brazen deception.
Despite his notoriety and the extensive coverage of his crimes, Beauty and the Bester reveals that Bester was considered “popular” behind bars, attracting a steady stream of visitors and so-called “fans.”
What Was Thabo Bester Jailed For?
In 2012, Thabo Bester’s double life finally caught up with him. After years of preying on women through the veneer of modelling contracts and online scams, he was convicted on two counts of rape and the murder of his girlfriend, model Nomfundo Tyhulu.
During the trial, prosecutors painted a chilling picture of a man who thrived on manipulation, someone who used good looks and charm as bait before turning violent. Tyhulu’s murder was described as the culmination of his escalating pattern of abuse, a brutal act that shocked South Africa and underscored the danger he posed to women.
Judge Hanlie Muller, handed down a life sentence, calling Bester “a manipulative and dangerous individual who weaponised charisma to trap his victims.”
The ruling meant he would spend the rest of his life behind bars, at least, that was the expectation at the time.
How Did Thabo Bester Escape Jail?
In May 2022, the Department of Correctional Services announced that Thabo Bester had died in a fire at Mangaung Correctional Centre.
He was being held in isolation, and the body found in his cell was described as charred beyond recognition. For a moment, it seemed as though the saga of South Africa’s most notorious prisoner had come to a dramatic, albeit strangely unremarkable, end.
But almost immediately, the details began to unravel. A post-mortem revealed the body was just 1.45 metres tall, far shorter than Bester’s 1.7-metre frame.
Forensic testing also showed blunt-force trauma to the head and, crucially, no signs of smoke inhalation, indicating the man was already dead before the fire.
Then came another bizarre twist: a woman claiming to be Bester’s mother attempted to collect the body, but DNA testing proved there was no biological link.
Enter Dr Nandipha Magudumana, a high-profile aesthetics doctor and social media personality whose glamorous image had made her a darling of lifestyle magazines.
Within days of the fire, she tried to claim the body herself, insisting she was Bester’s customary-law wife. Investigators would later allege that her bid was part of a far bigger scheme, helping Bester stage one of the most audacious escapes in South African history.
Living under the alias “TK Nkwaba,” Bester moved into a rented mansion with Magudumana in Johannesburg, where the pair ran a sham construction company called Arum Properties. Clients were duped into paying millions for projects that never materialised, while the couple played house as if nothing were amiss.
By March 2023, the façade collapsed. Photos of the pair casually shopping at Sandton City mall went viral, forcing officials to admit what many had long suspected: Bester was alive, and had slipped free from a maximum-security prison. The couple fled the country, but their freedom was short-lived.
They were arrested in Tanzania carrying multiple passports and large amounts of cash. Deported back to South Africa under intense media scrutiny, both now face a string of charges including fraud, violating a corpse, and defeating the ends of justice. Neither has entered a plea.
A final, grim discovery came weeks later. The body found in Bester’s cell was identified as 30-year-old Katlego Bereng Mpholo, who had gone missing in April 2022. How his body ended up in the prison remains one of the darkest and most disturbing questions in the case.
Where Is Thabo Bester Now?
Today, Bester is back in custody, serving his original life sentence while facing new charges related to his escape and fraud schemes.
Magudumana is also now behind bars, awaiting trial for aiding an escape, fraud, and violating a corpse.
Both attempted to block the release of Netflix’s Beauty and the Bester, claiming it would prejudice their cases, but the courts dismissed their applications.
Did Thabo Bester Get Paid For The Series?
If the circus couldn’t get any crazier, it was revealed in court that both Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha Magudumana had signed commercial agreements with Storyscope, the production company behind the Netflix series.
The contracts allowed the use of archival material from their lives, and, according to Netflix’s lawyers, they were compensated for it.
The twist? Even as Magudumana tried to block the documentary from airing, arguing it was defamatory she had already cashed the cheque.
