In the latest episode of the HBO hit, Nate Jacobs, famously portrayed by Australian actor Jacob Elordi, met his untimely death.
In an era where spoilers are unavoidable, the gruesome revelation quickly took over social feeds revealing not only who had died but how. Whether you’re still loyal to the once-praised show or you’ve been drawn back in thanks to the online fervor, here’s how it all unfolded.
After spending the entirety of season three drowning in a $1 million debt to a ruthless group of loan sharks, Nate’s fate was always going to be ugly.
Having already endured the loss of a finger and a toe at the hands of Naz’s henchmen, Nate was buried alive in a coffin beneath his own development project, with Cassie given a 72-hour window to pay up or lose him forever.
She scrambled and she delivered but it was too late. While Nate was buried, a venomous rattlesnake slithered in through an air vent in the coffin and bit him to fatal effect. 
It may have been a horrific way to go, but Elordi revealed he was delighted to play the scene out.
“That’s a cool way to go,” he shared in a behind the scenes clip shared by HBO.
“I had to go into this coffin. My shoulders were touching the side, and I couldn’t move my arms, and then they would drill the lid on, and it would get dark,” he said.
As a born-and-bred Queenslander the actor even shared his adoration of the snake he shared such an intimate space with.
“He was super cute. He was, like, real cuddly, so he just saddled up next to me, and it was nice,” he added.
The reactions to Nate’s death online were a veritable spectrum of shock and disbelief to joking. According to creator Sam Levinson however, it’s the exact ending to Nate’s story that fans were calling for. After all, he was the show’s most consistent villain.
“There’s this kind of funny thing where I know what the audience wants in terms of justice or karma and with that in mind, I always think, ‘Well, how can I give it to them?'” Levinson told Esquire. “How can I give them what they want, but make it so horrific and anxiety-inducing that by the time it happens, the audience isn’t so sure they wanted it?”
