TikTok users have found their latest obsession: Group 7. Confused? You’re not alone.
If you have spent time scrolling on the social media recently, you may have stumbled across the rising trend that has everyone’s talking about an elusive ‘Group 7’.
So what is it? And, exactly who, makes up this mysterious collective?
What is TikTok Group 7?
They say that the best people on the TikTok algorithm get placed into this group, so it has become a rising success, and a feral popularity contest. Influences like haleyybaylee, Cassie, bellapoarch plus celebrities like Madelyne Cline have reported being a part of Group 7. Even the popular biscuit brand Oreo has jumped on the trend.
At its core, Group 7 isn’t a traditional social club. In fact, it has no real name to it at all. It’s a purely fictional group made up by the internet.
What started as a simple promotion idea and ‘social experiment’ by Sophia James has become a growing phenomenon for TikTok users.
In a clip posted to TikTok, Sophia announced “if you are watching this video, you are in group 7”. That single line has sparked the now viral and accidental TikTok trend.
How Did TikTok Group 7 start?
Sophia James, an upcoming musician, decided to share a number of videos to promote her new song “So Unfair”.
In the marketing tactic-meets-social-media-experiment, the musician made seven videos all similar in style, backed to her new music track, whereby she assigned TikTok users a group.
in the clips, she would state: ““if you are watching this video, you are in group …”
With a little bit of algorithm luck, these videos indeed began to go viral with TikTokers opening their phones, hoping to stumble upon one of the videos that invites them to a numbered group. It appears, however, that seven has become the marker of popularity.
She would never have been able to know that one of her seven videos would indeed insanely viral. By far it has been shown that Group 7 is the new IT thing amongst the groups she has created, with the most likes, reposts, and shares.
Who Is In Group 7?
If you’ve naturally come across the video when scrolling through TikTok, congratulations, you’re in the club. Can anyone fact check you on it? No.
It’s unlikley the trend will translate to anything more than a memorable meme in social media history, but for now, it is a great way for TikTok influencers to share content and jump on yet another trend.
