We'll definitely be emulating her application technique

It’s a big month for Gracie Abrams. She earned our nomination for ‘chicest crop cut’ at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding, her album, Daughter from Hell, drops July 17th, and she’s been tapped by Chanel to be the face of their brand new fragrance, Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu.

The synergy between Abrams and the scent is clear. Both are classic but cool, with Abrams entering a new musical era that reflects the perfume’s primary goal: to (pleasantly) surprise everyone who experiences it.

Olivier Polge, the extraordinary perfumer behind the scent, describes the fragrance as “fascinating, sensual, [and] striking”, with ‘fascinating’ proving a particularly fitting descriptor, considering the inventive blend of notes inside.

“One first perceives the fruity top notes that quickly give way to a denser, more enveloping texture shaped by woody and amber notes,” Polge explains of the sensory journey awaiting. “On the skin, this fragrance never stays still. It expresses itself, evolves, and tells a different story on each person.” That’s the magic of an expertly crafted fragrance. It becomes something completely personal for every wearer.

Abrams’ own personal relationship with Chanel fragrance began in childhood, as she watched her grandmother apply her own signature scent. “She had a beautiful vanity with an oval mirror. I remember her lipstick and her fragrance—she wore No. 5, which I know is a different perfume, but that was my earliest memory,” Abrams shared of her fondness for the brand’s fragrance collection.

“I remember feeling like, “Wow, this is womanhood.” It was the pinnacle of growing into yourself. Scent is so special because it’s immediately associated with memory—it can take you back to being a kid or to an amazing day.”

Applying fragrance has become a daily ritual for Abrams. “I absolutely feel different when I wear perfume. I’ll be frustrated with myself if I realise I’ve left the house without it! You can feel quite naked without your signature scent,” she confessed. “My favourite thing about fragrance is that it leaves people remembering you after you’ve been in a place—like if you leave your sweater behind, it’s like you’re still there.”

She relies on a proven application technique to leave her signature scent behind. “I’m a classic “spray, spray, walk through the room” kind of person. There’s some drama in that!” says Abrams. “I actually asked the Chanel team on set if that was the right way, and they said yes, so I’ve been sticking with that ever since.”

Abrams’ Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Crush Absolu campaign will be released in August 2026, with the fragrance launching in September. Until then, get better acquainted with the scent’s story at chanel.com.
