It-girl Lara Worthington has been teasing her new beauty line Ommage for months, and the wait is finally (finally!) over. On September 22nd, it will be available to purchase online. She’s starting out with a curated edit of three products – a base (consider it a cross between a foundation and a tint), lipstick, and buffer brush.
Ahead of the launch date, we spoke with Lara exclusively about the inspiration behind the brand, why it’s different, and who she looks to for beauty inspiration.
Why did you decide on these 3 products?
I wanted to start with the products I actually use and reach for every day. A great base, a lipstick and a really good brush felt like the most instinctive place to begin.
There’s also this idea of bringing a playful, modern sexiness back to luxury makeup. Everything is easy and intuitive to use, and you can wear it your way. There are no rules.
What makes them different and unique?
It’s a combination of product, design and the way you use them. It’s beautifully designed and formulated without feeling too precious or serious. I want you to pick it up, touch it, play with it and wear it however you want. There’s a playfulness to all of it.
Everything is beautiful and tactile, but also incredibly functional. FIRST BASE sits somewhere between a tint and a foundation. The BUFFER BRUSH has a dent where your hand naturally wants to hold it, and the LIP COAT can be worn saturated, stained, smudged or blurred with your finger.
Creating a collection of luxury makeup that feels democratic is important to me.
What was the inspiration behind the line? What did you think women or the industry was missing?
I felt beauty had become very prescriptive, with so many steps, rules and products telling women how they should look or what they need to fix. I wanted to make something more instinctive. Something you could touch, smudge, build and make your own.
Visually, I’ve always been interested in sculpture, art, industrial design and objects that have some imperfection to them. John Chamberlain, Carol Bove, Josef Albers, even ordinary things, like the shape of a dented car. I wanted the products to have that same tension between the industrial and the organic. It creates something unexpectedly sensual and emotional. There’s something very human about that.
Can you share one beauty secret?
Use your fingers. Makeup always looks better to me when it feels a little lived-in rather than too perfect. I love putting lipstick on and then pressing or smudging it in with my finger. The imperfection makes it feel more modern. I feel more like me.
Who’s your beauty icon?
Chloë Sevigny. I love that she has never looked overly “done.” There’s always something individual and slightly unexpected about the way she wears beauty. She looks like herself.
What are your tips for applying these products?
The way I use FIRST BASE, is I take about two pumps and work from the centre of the face out, then buff whatever is left down towards the jaw and neck. I like skin to still look like skin, so I build coverage only where I need it.
With LIP COAT, I play with it depending on how I feel. Straight from the bullet for strong color, dabbed on as a stain, or blurred around the edges with my finger. There really aren’t rules… that’s the point.
You’re a busy working mum. What are your hacks for saving time but looking great?
I’ve learnt not to overthink it. I get ready pretty quickly and I know what works for me, good skin, brushed-up brows, a little color on the lips and something simple with my hair. My biggest hack is probably having a few things you know make you feel good and sticking to them.
