The Polly Pocket Movie: Cast, Plot And Release Date

A Polly Pocket movie is officially in the works, with none other than Lily Collins taking on the titular role.

Yes, this means Barbie isn’t the only doll getting the big screen treatment—in fact she’s not the only toy, with there reportedly being more than 45 Mattel movies planned for the future. These films don’t only include Polly Pocket but Barney, Uno, Major Matt Manson, Magic 8 ball and Hot Wheels.

For our favourite tiny toy, the film has actually been in the works since 2021, which means we already know quite a bit about the upcoming film.

Who’s In The Polly Pocket Movie Cast?

So far, we know that Emily In Paris star Lily Collins will be playing our favourite tiny doll, Polly Pocket.

Collins announced the news on Instagram in 2021 , when she posted a photograph of herself as a child holding a Polly Pocket toy with the caption, “Little Lil, big news. As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pockets, it’s a real dream come true to announce this project! I am partnering with the most inspiring powerhouse team—RobbieBrenner, @lenadunham, @mattel and @mgmstudios—to reintroduce Polly to the world in a fun, modern way… bringing these tiny toys to the big screen. Truly so excited to be coming on as both a producer and Polly herself! Can’t wait to dive into this pastel world…”

While we don’t know any other cast names yet, we will do know that Lena Dunham is writing and directing the film.

What Will The Polly Pocket Movie Be About?

While the exact plot hasn’t been revealed, Variety reported in 2021 that the film will “centre on a young girl and a pocket-sized woman who form a friendship”.

Dunham has also said that she’s aiming for a “smart playful” film that speaks to young women “without condescension.”

“Polly Pocket was responsible for countless hours of childhood escapism for me–Polly gave me a tiny world of magic and autonomy to narrate, so it’s pretty poetic to be tackling these same ideas now as a director collaborating with the brilliant Lily Collins, Robbie Brenner, Mattel and MGM. I’m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart playful films that speak to them without condescension”, Dunham told the outlet.

In October 2022, Dunham revealed a little more about the story when she told The Hollywood Reporter, “We have a lot of fun with the idea of what happens when a small person encounters a big world.”

When it comes to small, Dunham emphasises that she means really small, stating “the original teensy tiny ’90s size…they made her a little bigger now, which I support, because of choking hazards. But I’m writing ’90s tiny.”

When Will The Polly Pocket Movie Be Released?

Dunham told The Hollywood Reporter that she finished up the second draft of the script in October 2022.

Considering the current WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes occurring in Hollywood right now, filming realistically won’t be starting until later this year, at a minimum.
