His new role isn’t a far cry from his iconic character Jon Snow.
Playing Dane Whitman, who is the third character in the Marvel comic books to become the superhero Black Knight, he’ll once again be wielding a sword.
And his love interest bears a very similar name to another GoT character: Sersi (pronounced the same as Cersei). Played by Gemma Chan, Sersi is a fourth-generation member of the Eternals, an evolutionary offshoot of the human race.
But rather than play the hero, this time Kit’s character may have a dark side.
According to Just Jared, “His uncle Nathan Garrett was a villainous Black Knight who was killed by Iron Man in a battle. Before he died, he summoned Dane to restore honor to the Black Knight legacy."
At least Kit has some prior experience carrying the weight of his family’s fate on his sword.
"I'm trying to choose things as far away from Jon Snow as possible, but I'm playing a superhero and he's got a sword," Kit joked during a press conference.
Despite the similarities, Kit says his new character will have clear differences. “Without saying too much at all, on the surface, [Black Knight] can look like Jon Snow in the comics but there is actually a lot to be done that is different," he told Comicbook.com.
Talking about the movie, which he is currently filming, he added, "I went from a brilliant play which sort of kickstarted my career and Game of Thrones came along and that lasted ten years. As Game of Thrones finished, Marvel came along and so what I'm really excited about is getting involved in a new world and in a new universe."
"Coming here, I can see just how passionate people are about this world. This is the first time I've met people on that level about Marvel and I'm just thrilled. It's a whole new chapter and a whole new character to start thinking about.”
The Eternals will be released on November 6, 2020.
