Kim Cattrall To Return As Samantha Jones In ‘And Just Like That’

Will her stilted frenemy arc with Carrie finally be over?

Samantha stans, the drought is over.

The news Sex And The City fans have been waiting for is finally here. Kim Cattrall will reprise her role as sexually liberated public relations expert Samantha Jones in the new season of SATC reboot And Just Like That…

However, it will not be the full return we’re seeing in the form of John Corbett as Aiden Shaw. Instead, Cattrall will be back on the show in a cameo sense only, to shore up the storyline between estranged friends Carrie and Samantha.

For those who may not know, in And Just Like That…, Samantha’s absence has been explained by her moving to London to pursue a career opportunity. Samantha and Carrie, once fast friends (although, allegedly we cannot say the same about Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall), have since communicated via text only, in a stilted friendship that is not at all reminiscent of their previous closeness.

In the new season, Cattrall is expected to appear in just one scene. Sources told Variety that Cattrall shot the scene back on March 22, in New York City. They add that she did not need to see or speak with the stars of the series, including SJP, or showrunner Michael Patrick King.

These curious tidbits lead us to question, how quenching to our Samantha drought will this episode be? It doesn’t appear that we will have a scene where Samantha hugs Carrie, and apologises for being so MIA even when *spoiler alert for AJLT Season 1* Big died.

According to Variety, the scene will show Samantha still in London, having a phone conversation with Carrie Bradshaw. It follows a plan that was hatched at the end of the first season for Carrie and Samantha to meet up.

It is believed that Sex And The City costume designer Patricia Field (who has not worked on AJLT) dressed Samantha for the scene. Cattrall’s representative has not yet commented on the announcement.

Cattrall has repeatedly denied having any interest in returning to the show since announcing that she was retiring her Samantha boots in 2016. She was not interested in reprising the character in a third film, which famously led to a falling out with Parker, who was keen to do the project.

When the And Just Like That… reboot was conceived, Cattrall was not approached to play Samantha. Other characters were added to the line-up, the likes of Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) and Seema Patel (Sarita Choudhury), but Samantha stans have commented online that something is missing without her influential character on the small screen.

So, Casey Bloys, the chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, got in touch with Cattrall about the potential of getting back to her Samantha roots, and this time, she said yes!

A huge win for Samantha Jones fans everywhere.

At this stage, it appears that only one And Just Like That… star has publicly commented on Cattrall’s return, Evan Handler, who plays Charlotte York’s husband Harry Goldenblatt

He told People, “I think it is great. I do.”

Handler added that he found out about the cameo the same day the rest of us did. So, it’s clear it was kept very hush, hush.

“I learned it the same day you did.

“Apparently, [Cattrall’s cameo] was shot in the garage somewhere with no contact with anybody, so the only place I have to welcome her is into my living room when it airs on television,” he said.

Awww.

The second season of And Just Like That… premieres on June 22, 2023. It is believed Cattrall’s scene will not air until August.
