11-year-old boy found dead at Oatley train station in Sydney

Police confirm sad news

An 11-year-old boy who fled from a care facility on April 22 has been found dead at Oatley train station.

A police search involving the dog unit and Polair took place in a desperate attempt to find the unnamed child after he ran from the institution in Oatley Parade in Sydneyโ€™s south at approximately 7.15pm, reports 9 News.

Authorities have now confirmed the boy was found dead at Oatley Train Station just before 9.30pm. Heโ€™s said to have been hit by a train. 

The news outlet also reports that the deceased was known to have had mental health issues.

As a result of the accident, trains were delayed due to the tragic fatality.

 

Civic Disability Services, where the boy was staying in their short-term accomodation facility, have released a statement.

โ€œThis is a tragic and distressing incident and our deepest sympathies and thoughts go out to the childโ€™s family,โ€ Civic chief executive Annie Doyle told 9News.

โ€œCounselling and assistance services have been made available for our staff and others who have been affected.โ€

The statement also said they have commenced an internal review to prevent any further incidents in care. 

A thorough police investigation is currently underway into the circumstances surrounding the childโ€™s death, and police are appealing to anyone with information to contact St George Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
