This season of Farmer Wants A Wife has officially ended, with (some) of our farmers and their leading ladies riding off into the sunset. One of those loved-up couples was Farmer Dylan and Ally, who had a turbulent, albeit magnetic, connection throughout the season.
In choosing Ally in the finale, Dylan brought the ongoing love triangle between himself, Ally and Scarlett to an end. While some of the other farmers’ choices seemed more obvious, we admit we were on the edge of our seats waiting to see who Dylan would pick, with his connections with both women appearing equally strong.
In the finale, Dylan declared his love for Ally, saying: “This final decision has been made from my heart and what my gut tells me to do. I have to follow what I feel and I love you. I love you a lot.”
He doubled down on that sentiment in the reunion episode, claiming he believed he had found his wife in Ally.
However, cracks in their relationship were easy to spot, leaving some viewers questioning whether Dylan was truly ready for the lifelong commitment that comes with finding a wife (the very premise of the show, mind you).
Throughout the season, viewers caught glimpses of Dylan’s unwavering and, at times, stubborn approach to relationships. This was perhaps best exemplified during a mid-season community AFL game with Farmer Zac, when some of Dylan’s contestants opted not to play and instead support from the sidelines.
Dylan appeared to interpret their decision as a test of commitment, rather than accepting that some people prefer to cheer from afar — a choice he seemed to treat as bordering on a character flaw.
While Ally made the significant decision to stay with Dylan at his farm in South Australia after he chose her in the finale (a commitment that none of the other finalists made for their farmers) Dylan has since admitted he struggled to meet her halfway.
“She definitely wanted to make it work, but I wasn’t willing to meet her halfway, I think is the best way to put it,” he told 7NEWS.

Farmer Dylan confirmed to Woman’s Day that he has made the “disappointing” decision to end his relationship with Ally.
“When filming finished and we were back into normal life, I spent a lot of time thinking about what the next few years would look like, and I had to be honest with myself,” he told the publication.
“I wasn’t willing to compromise on the goals and dreams that I’m chasing. And I couldn’t ask Ally to compromise on the future that she wanted. I didn’t think that was fair. Ally deserves someone who’s ready to build the sort of future she wants. Our lives were headed in different directions.”
Throughout the season, Dylan often appeared torn between finding love and pursuing his own ambitions. Between the relentless demands of running a farm and his dream of becoming a successful saddle bronc rider—a career that requires extensive travel—it increasingly seemed as though there was little room in his life for a serious relationship.
In hindsight, it’s fair to wonder whether Dylan was truly in a position to commit to a wife at all. To his credit, Dylan doesn’t shy away from taking responsibility for how things unfolded.
“I’m not proud of how things have ended up. Everyone calls me a man-child and they’re probably dead right,” he admitted to Woman’s Day, adding that part of him was swept up in the whirlwind of reality television.
“I think that played a part because the farm kind of takes a back seat in your mind and you’re like, ‘Yeah, this can work,’ and then you’re back to reality.”
Speaking to 7NEWS, Dylan similarly acknowledged that the transition back to everyday life changed his perspective.
“Throughout the experience it all made sense, but once we got back to reality, it all sunk in,” he said.
“I decided it wasn’t fair on Ally and called it. Ally is a really gorgeous person and has a lot going for her. But I couldn’t give her what she wants, and she deserves a fella that’s going to give her all that, and then some.”
He continued: “It was good spending that time with her, but I felt bad. Because I was obviously back to doing my thing and I knew that she wasn’t. I think she was happy, but I don’t know if it was what she wanted. It would have been hard for her because she’s obviously at the farm and there’s not too much for her to do when I’m at work. I don’t think it was really fair, and I was feeling really bad.”
As for Ally, she’s handled the breakup with a maturity that has been sorely lacking throughout the entire situation.
She told Woman’s Day: “I was willing to reshape my life to join his, but I also realised I needed to feel chosen in return. I was making plans to move and build a home and make that life work.”
While the 23-year-old says the experience taught her that “compromise has to go both ways”, she’s harbouring no resentment towards Dylan, with the pair remaining friends.
“I’m disappointed that it didn’t work out, but just because a relationship has ended doesn’t mean it’s failed,” Ally said, revealing she spent two weeks on Dylan’s farm after the reunion and that the couple ultimately split around a month after filming wrapped.
“Dylan’s kindness, humour and generosity didn’t disappear when our romantic relationship ended. Sometimes the strongest connections are ones that evolve into friendship rather than end completely.”
Maybe Dylan should chase his rodeo dreams first and revisit love when he’s genuinely ready to make room for it. Who knows? Perhaps we’ll see him back on Farmer Wants a Wife in 2036!
