Never would one expect to hear the names Melissa McCarthy, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in the same sentence. But following the Duchess of Sussex’s 40×40 initiative birthday video, it turns out that the pair have not only met, but the Bridesmaids star had an oh-so-sweet encounter with the royal couple.
In an interview on the morning talk show Lorraine, McCarthy recalled her time while working on the Duchess‘ campaign, explaining one incredibly sweet moment that she noticed when Harry entered the room.
“You know what was so cute—I could tell he walked in because we were talking and she went, ‘Oh hi,’ and her whole face lit up,” McCarthy explained about a Zoom planning meeting that the two had while developing the concept for the video.
“It was so sweet and genuine.”
She added, “And then he ducked his head in and was like, ‘Is it weird if I juggle?’ And I said ‘It sure is,’ and then I said ‘What about standing outside that window?’ and he goes, ‘That’s what I was thinking.'”
The Nine Perfect Strangers star continued by explaining that she appreciated the Duke’s interesting idea, saying: “I was like, ‘Are you weird and funny to boot?’ I love anyone that will do something weird, so I was like, ‘I tip my hat.'”
Both Markle and McCarthy wound up filming the video to promote the Duchess’ 40×40 mentorship initiative that was built in honour of her 40th birthday. The aim of the project is to encourage others to spend a mere 40 minutes of their day to mentor and guide another woman re-entering the workforce after the COVID-19 pandemic.
In McCarthy’s interview, which she had alongside her Bridesmaids co-star Chris O’Dowd, her seemingly random involvement with the royal’s 40th birthday video was brought up after the interviewer chose to question her on whether O’Dowd or Prince Harry juggling was funnier to her.
“I mean they’re different glorious traits,” she responded. “It’s apples and orangutans. They both are my favourites, let’s leave it at that.”
