What’s Really Going On Between Jackie O And Kyle Sandilands?

“Unfocused” and “unworkable”

KIIS FM has terminated Jackie “O” Henderson’s $100 million contract after she informed executives she could no longer continue working alongside Kyle Sandilands in the wake of their highly publicised on-air clash.

The decision was disclosed to the ASX late Tuesday by ARN, KIIS’s parent company, confirming Henderson will step down from The Kyle and Jackie O Show just two years into the duo’s landmark 10-year, $200 million deal signed in 2023.

Sandilands, meanwhile, has been suspended for two weeks over what ARN described as “serious misconduct.” The broadcaster has indicated he must rectify the contractual breach or risk having his own agreement terminated.

The news broke after Jackie was spotted in public this morning, on what had been scheduled as her return to breakfast radio. Instead, she confirmed she would be extending her time away from the radio show following the on-air clash that left listeners unsettled.

The tension stems from a February 20 broadcast, during which Sandilands criticised Henderson live on air, calling her “unfocused” and “unworkable” amid a discussion about her interest in astrology. The exchange, delivered to thousands in real time, saw Henderson visibly shaken and upset.

“I totally am offended by you saying something like that,” she replied, adding she would never publicly critique him in the same way.

“I come in here and I do my job and I do it well,” she continued.

“I wouldn’t say that lately, no,” Sandilands responded.

For many listeners, the moment felt bigger than a workplace disagreement, echoing an all-too-familiar dynamic: a woman being professionally admonished in a public forum, then expected to carry on.

Speaking on The Morning Show, entertainment reporter Peter Ford also alleged that Jackie’s manager had described her as feeling “unsafe” in the workplace.

Sandilands has continued to host the program alongside newsreader Brooklyn Ross during Jackie’s absence, admitting on air that even he is unsure what comes next.

For more than 25 years, Henderson and Sandilands have built one of Australia’s most commercially successful radio partnerships. Their longevity has long been framed as proof of chemistry and loyalty. But longevity also invites evolution, and occasionally, recalibration.

In high-profile duos, particularly those in which a woman is positioned as the emotional ballast to a more combative counterpart, the labour can be subtle yet substantial. The expectation to absorb, soften or steady the tone is rarely contractual, yet often assumed.

As listeners await Henderson’s return, the conversation has shifted beyond programming logistics. It gestures toward a broader question of workplace dynamics: how criticism is delivered, how authority is negotiated, and what respect looks like within long-standing professional relationships.
