Here’s Everything You Need To Know About *That* Chaotic ‘Ozark’ Ending

No one gets out clean.

Just when you thought that Netflix’s cult cartel crime thriller Ozark couldn’t get any darker, part one of the highly anticipated fourth and final season has proven that it’s not always sunny in Missouri.

From crime wars to betrayals and (you guessed it) a whole heap of money laundering, part one certainly exceeds expectations.

If, like us, you’ve already binge watched the entire seven episodes, then you’ll no doubt be wondering what will come next for the Byrde family and their unlikely allies.

Here, we break down everything you need to know about *that* shocking cliffhanger and what we can expect in part two.

Spoilers ahead (obviously).

What Happens At The End Of ‘Ozark’ Season 4 Part 1?

The opening of Season 4 starts with a flashforward of the Byrdes in a car. Where are they going? How long have they been travelling for?

Then, the car shockingly flips off the road.

The answer to those questions, along with the fate of the Byrdes remains largely unknown throughout the first part of the season.

The remainder of the season sees Marty (Jason Bateman) and Wendy (Laura Linney) attempt to broker a deal with the FBI on Omar Navarro’s (Felix Solis) behalf, a deal that will see him retire from the cartel with immunity from prosecution.

Of course, as we’ve learnt in past seasons, this task isn’t without its pitfalls.

With Ruth (Julia Garner) as her right-hand woman, Darlene (Lisa Emery) continues dealing heroin, much to the dismay of the Navarro cartel.

Marty is also told to stop Darlene from distributing drugs, which becomes a little more difficult when his son Jonah (Skylar Gaertner) begins working for her (read: laundering money), behind his back.

We’re also introduced to Omar’s nephew Javi (Alfonso Herrera), who causes a lot of trouble for the Byrdes by foiling their negotiations with the FBI and killing off several important characters (more on that later).

The shocking twist ending comes in the last few minutes of the final episode where Javi, on a power high following his successful dealings with the FBI, fatally shoots Darlene and Wyatt (Charlie Tahan) in retaliation for them failing to cease distributing heroin.

Ruth uncovers their bodies and a once-again parentless Zeke before threatening the Byrdes after finding our Javi is the killer.

Marty pleads with her to not get involved before screaming back “if you want to stop me, you’re going to have to f-king kill me”.

The first part ends on a pretty big cliffhanger, with Ruth driving away from the Byrdes, her destination unknown.

Considering that part one arguably has an ambiguous ending, there’s a lot of questions that need to be answered in part two.

For starters, will Marty and Wendy finally be able to escape the cartel for good? How will Jonah’s parents react to his betrayal?

Will Ruth avenge Wyatt and Darlene by murdering Javi? How will the FBI’s deal with the Navarro *actually* pan out? Will the truth about Helen finally be revealed?

Finally, what will happen to baby Zeke?

The showrunners certainly have a lot of ground to cover in seven episodes.

When Will Part Two Of ‘Ozark’ Season 4 Be Released?

Fortunately for us, all our questions will be answered on April 29, a casual three months after the highly charged Season 4 Part 1 finale.

As for what we can expect from the second part? Well, the tagline promises ‘no one gets out clean’ so we’re sure there will be blood on more hands than one.

Will There Be A Season 5 Of ‘Ozark’?

Much to our dismay, the fourth season of Ozark will be its last.

However, we do know that the final part will neatly wrap the Byrdes story up with a bow.

“I always want closure. I don’t want to feel messed with. I want to feel like, “OK, that was the end.” So hopefully people will feel closure by the end — whether they like it or not,” explained showrunner Chris Mundy to The Hollywood Reporter.

With comparisons to cult classics like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad, we have a feeling this is one we’ll be coming back to again and again.

Season 4 of Ozark is currently available to stream on Netflix.
