Spring racing season is upon us with the Melbourne Cup Carnival – and all the trackside glamour that goes with it – kicking off in just a few days’ time.
But with strict dress codes for different race days, choosing what to wear can be confusing. From monochrome for Derby Day to bright and bold for Cup Day, we’ve explained the different style rules for each trackside occasion.
Derby Day
Date: Saturday, November 3rd, 2018
Dress code: The first day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival is also one of the most strict when it comes to dress codes. Derby Day is a completely monochrome affair with attendees either wearing a black-and-white mix or one-tone outfits. Headpieces are required, however, think traditional: a wide-brimmed hat or chic headband. Save OTT ensembles for Cup Day.

Melbourne Cup Day
Date: Tuesday, November 6th, 2018
Dress code: There’s no such thing as too much when it comes to dressing for Cup Day. Think bright colours, bold patterns and big headpieces. Headwear is essential and can be anything from a wide-brimmed hat to a silk turban to an embellished headband.

Oaks Day
Date: Thursday, November 8th, 2018
Dress code: Traditionally known as Ladies Day, Oaks Day is all about feminine pieces, pastel tones and florals.

Stakes Day
Date: Saturday, November 10th, 2018
Dress code: Stakes Day is the most relaxed of the spring racing carnival with attendees opting for a less is more approach. Think skirts and elevated tops, simple headpieces and pretty summer dresses.
