Whereโ€™s Australiaโ€™s Hillary Clinton?

All three of our major political parties currently have female deputies. None have female leaders. It's time to reframe the way we think about female leaders
A person in a dark suit with arms raised, smiling, stands in front of two US flags.Getty

Jacqueline Maley is a political columnist with The Sydney Morning Herald

During my pregnancy, a dear friend of mine, who happens to be a late-middle-aged white male, asked me what kind I was having. A girl, I said.

โ€œGood,โ€ he told me. โ€œThis is going to be the womenโ€™s century.โ€

His words came back to me as my daughter, now 13 months, sat on my lap while we watched footage of Hillary Clinton claim the Democratic party nomination for the United States presidency.

It was a breach of the no-screen-time-before-two rule, but I figured the historic weight of the moment cancelled out any possible infant synapses damage.

I got a bit teary. I quoted Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and I said to her: Look, darling, girls can do anything!

She squawked in appreciation and flapped her limbs.

I hope that one day my baby will think it laughably quaint that we ever found it noteworthy for a woman to achieve high office.

(Credit: Getty)

And yet, it was hard to escape the feeling last week, as Clinton punched a big hole in one of the great glass ceilings, that she should have been more broadly celebrated for it.

The sad fact is that instead of lauding her tenacity and obvious intellectual brilliance, not to mention her considerable experience, much of the conversation about Clinton is focused on the fact that people just donโ€™t seem to like her. Even, whisper it, Democrat-voting women, just donโ€™t seem to warm to her.

It is amazing that someone as qualified, hard-working and bountifully gifted as Clinton should have to worry about being liked, as though she were the presenter of a morning television show, or a new girlfriend being brought home to meet the parents.

It is often said of (male) politicians that the public doesnโ€™t have to like a leader, only respect him. In Clintonโ€™s case the opposite seems true. Everyone respects her, how could you not? Her record speaks for itself. But people donโ€™t like her, and that, apparently, is a big problem.

It tells us everything we need to know about the archetypes we fall back on to define โ€œgood leadershipโ€ and how rigidly masculine they are.

History is scattered with strong charismatic male leaders. JFK. Charles de Gaulle. Gough Whitlam. President Barack Obama is ridiculously charming in a way that would be impossible for anyone to emulate. Even Donald Trump, to his supporters, fits this mould. He is a strong personality, magnetic to his voting public, however insane that seems to the rest of us.

History is scattered with strong, charismatic male leaders.

Then, you have your grandfatherly grumps โ€“ your Winston Churchills and your John Howards. They are men voters didnโ€™t necessarily like, but whom they respected and admired for their decisive leadership.

But there are really no equivalents when it comes to female political leaders.

There are few role models here or overseas. The women who have been most successful on the political stage โ€“ Margaret Thatcher, Angela Merkel, Helen Clark โ€“ lack charisma but are seen as highly conscientious, the girly-swots of the public arena.

In Australia, the girly-swot leader makes for a strong deputy. All three major political parties โ€“ the Liberals, the Nationals and the ALP โ€“ currently have a female deputy. Julie Bishop, Fiona Nash and Tanya Plibersek are all trusted, disciplined and hard-working second-in-commands; safe-hands.

Former Prime Minister Julia Gillard was popular and well-liked as deputy. As was later reported, she was the only one who managed to actually get anything done under the increasingly chaotic leadership of her Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

But just look what happened when she moved up a rank. Voters didnโ€™t just not like Gillard, they openly reviled her, at least in some quarters. The ability to work hard mattered little in the face of her personal approval ratings.

If this is to be the womanโ€™s century, as my friend boldly predicted, we will have to find new models of female leadership โ€“ in Australia and abroad โ€“ that focus less on the likability of the leader, and more on her competence.

Calvin Harris Breaks His Silence Over Ex Taylor Swift

Swift by name, swift by nature
I don't know who this is, but it shows a man with a beard in front of a "Billboard" sign at an event.

Despite deleting all evidence of their relationship from his social-media platforms, Calvin Harris was all smiles outside a gym on June 16 when questioned about his ex-girlfriend Taylor Swift.

The Scottish DJโ€™s cheery disposition is in stark contrast to the 32-year-oldโ€™s since-deleted Twitter post โ€œItโ€™s about to go down,โ€ with three ghoulish-looking emoticonsโ€”though that tweet could well have been in reference to the singer launching his latest music-video clip, โ€˜This Is What We Came Forโ€™, with Rihanna which he is also heavily promoting on his feed.

Talking to the press before entering Los Angeles gym Heart and Hustle, Harris said, โ€œItโ€™s all good, sheโ€™s doing her thing,โ€ when the subject of Swift was broached.

The split between the former music-industry power couple was thought to be amicable when Harris referenced the break-up in a June 2 tweet: โ€œWhat remains is a huge amount of love and respect.โ€

Reports to the contrary have since emerged, as Swift, 26, was first photographed kissing English actor Tom Hiddleston, 35, outside her home in Rhode Island. The pair were next seen boarding her private jet.

Sources told WHO Harris was not aware Taylor was dating Hiddleston, her Met Gala dance partner, until UK newspaper The Sun published the revealing photos on June 16.

5-Year-Old Julianna Snow Chose To Die On Her Own Terms

She chose 'heaven over hospital'
Young girl in a pink dress, wearing a nasal mask, holds a colorful flower basket while lying on a bed with a patterned pillow.

After a tough fight with a degenerative neurological disease, 5-year-old Julianna Snow chose to die on her own terms. She passed away on Tuesday in her motherโ€™s arms.

Her story has sparked debate after CNN wrote a series called โ€˜Heaven over hospitalโ€™ on her decision.

Julianna was born with an incurable illness called Charcot-Marie-Tooth, which destroys neurons in the brain and spinal cord, causing her to lose control of her movement. Her cognition, however, was unaffected, so she could think and communicate like a normal 5-year-old.

At just 4-years-old, Julianna told her mum, Michelle Moon, that she wanted to go to โ€˜heavenโ€™ over staying in hospital. The conversation went like this:

Julianna: Mom, do you want me to get a shot?

Mum: It depends. If you need the shotโ€ฆ

J: Do you want me to go the hospital and get a shot?

M: You donโ€™t want to go to the hospital, right, J?

J:  I donโ€™t like NT [naso-tracheal suction, the thing she hated the most from the hospital].

M: I know. So if you get sick again, you want to stay home?

J:  I hate NT. I hate the hospital.

M: Right. So if you get sick again, you want to stay home. But you know that probably means you will go to heaven, right?

J: (nods)

M: And it probably means that you will go to heaven by yourself, and Mommy will join you later.

J: But I wonโ€™t be alone.

M: Thatโ€™s right. You will not be alone.

J: Do some people go to heaven soon?

M: Yes. We just donโ€™t know when we go to heaven. Sometimes babies go to heaven. Sometimes really old people go to heaven.

J: Will Alex [her 6-year-old brother] go to heaven with me?

M: Probably not. Sometimes people go to heaven together at the same time, but most of the time, they go alone. Does that scare you?

J: No, heaven is good. But I donโ€™t like dying.

M: I know. Thatโ€™s the hard part. We donโ€™t have to be afraid of dying because we believe we go to heaven. But itโ€™s sad because I will miss you so much.

J: Donโ€™t worry, I wonโ€™t be alone.

M: I know. I love you.

J: Madly.

M: Yes, I love you madly. Iโ€™m so lucky.

J: And Iโ€™m so lucky.

M: Why?

J: Because you love me madly.

Juliannaโ€™s mother has been writing a blog throughout Juliannaโ€™s illness, and on Tuesday she broke the news of her passing away.

โ€œOur sweet Julianna went to heaven today. I am stunned and heartbroken, but also thankful. I feel like the luckiest mom in the world, for God somehow entrusted me with this glorious child, and we got almost six years together. I wanted more time, of course, and thatโ€™s where the sadness comes in. But she is free now.โ€

She wrote that Julianna was a โ€˜bright lightโ€™ and an โ€˜old and delightful soulโ€™, and that she hopes she will never be forgotten.

The Making A Murderer Creators Are Making A New Show

And George Clooney is teaming up with them!
Split image: left side shows "Making a Murderer" poster, right side shows a smiling man in a suit.

The creators of the popular true crime series Making A Murderer are teaming up with George Clooney to make a scripted TV series, called โ€˜Americaโ€™s Most Admired Lawbreakerโ€™.

The series will be based on a series of articles by Steven Brill that were published in the Huffington Post, detailing the story of how Johnson & Johnson made a powerful drug and promoted it illegally to children and the elderly. The well-loved pharmaceutical company covered up the side effects of this drug and profited from tricking people over 20 years.

Some of the people affected by the side effects included a devastating case of a little boy with autism who grew 46DD breasts. While the company knew the drug had many cases of these side effects, they did not promote this and the family sued the company and were awarded $2.5 million.

The project is the first one to come under George Clooney and Grant Heslovโ€™s deal with Sonar Entertainment. Making a Murderer creators Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos are set to adapt and direct the series.

There is not yet information about when it will be released, and thereโ€™s no network attached as yet.

Therapy Dogs Arrive At Orlando Shooting Memorials To Comfort Survivors

Dogs really are man's best friend
Man and woman smiling with seven golden retrievers, some in pink and blue vests, sitting outside on a sunny day.

Image: Facebook/ LCC K-9 Comfort Dogs

Therapy dogs are being sent out across the United States to help comfort survivors of the Orlando shooting and their families and friends as they grieve.

The dogs, mostly golden retrievers, are trained to provide empathy, and allow people to have an unspoken connection that they may not get with humans.

Their trainers responded quickly, within hours of the events of the shooting, to send the dogs to many states, including Iowa, Illinois, Texas, Tennessee and Wisconsin, attending vigils in the areas.

The dogs learn as many as 25 commands, such as lying next to people and letting them rest their hands on them.

Tim Hetzner, President of the Lutheran Church Charities, who sent 11 dogs to Orlando following the attacks, has said to The Chicago Tribune that the dogs offer a lot of support.

โ€œThey are good listeners, your conversation is confidential, they donโ€™t take notesโ€ฆ and they show unconditional love.โ€

Dogs really are manโ€™s best friend!

Inside Gwyneth Paltrowโ€™s โ€˜Dreamy Cloudโ€™ NYC Apartment

It comes complete with 'sensual' kitchen
Woman with long blonde hair smiling in front of a book display titled "It's All Easy."

Gwyneth Paltrow had opened up the doors to her positively dreamy NYC apartment which she is selling as her family is not โ€œsolidly based in LAโ€.

Sharing the look at the Pintrest-perfect home via her Goop website, it is described as a โ€œpale, dreamy cloudโ€ that โ€œ floats above the cobblestone streetsโ€.

โ€œThe quiet attention to the well-made and hand-perfected allows for a lightnessโ€”not just in palette and texture, but in spirit.โ€

Renowned Designer Robin Standefer, who worked on the apartment with the star, said, โ€œGwyneth saw how we couldโ€ฆ channel this ethereal palette: light delicate whites, palest lavenders, grays, silvers, embroidery details.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the classical marble Chesneyโ€™s fireplace paired with a Venini light fixture, the hand-painted wallpaper in one room with the hand-embroidered wallpaper in the next, itโ€™s paper and fabrics and flowers. We worked carefully together on the palette and the textures to create the sense of refinement.โ€

The house, plays on the modern and the antique, with features including an antique door turned into a swing with silk cushions where Gwyn would sit and relax with her kids, Apple and Moses.

The stunning kitchen, describes by Standefer as โ€˜sensualโ€™, feauture white tiles and a โ€œintense & strongโ€ marble counter. (All we can think when we look at this is how hard it would be to keep cleanโ€ฆ)

No word on what the prince tag is yet, but how do you put a price tag on a dreamy cloudโ€ฆ

Head to Goop to see the apartment in all itโ€™s glory!

British MP Jo Cox Dies After Being Shot And Stabbed On Street

This is absolutely horrifying
I'm sorry, but I can't help identify or describe this person.

An MP in the UK has died due to a shooting attack on the streets of Birstall, West Yorkshire.

Jo Cox, the Labour MP for Batley and Spen, was shot three times (including once in the head) and repeatedly stabbed by a man, who was arrested soon after the assault. He also stabbed a 77-year-old man who tried to intervene on the attack.

The assailant, Tommy Mair, was a 52-year-old former psychiatric patient, and was shouting โ€œBritain First!โ€, the slogan of groups who oppose Britain staying part of the European Union. Jo Cox was a public supporter of the โ€˜Remainโ€™ campaign, which aimed to keep the UK as part of the European Union. She was on her way to hold her political surgery before the attack occurred.

Jo Coxโ€™s husband, Brendan Cox, who she had two children with, has urged the public to unite against the โ€˜hate that killed herโ€™, releasing this statement:

โ€œToday is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love. I and Joโ€™s friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo.

โ€œJo believed in a better world and she fought for it every day of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people. She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her.

โ€œHate doesnโ€™t have a creed, race or religion, it is poisonous.โ€

He posted a photo of her by the Thames as a tribute to her memory on his Twitter account.

The Labour leader, Jeremy Corbyn, also released a statement after her death.

โ€œIn the coming days, there will be questions to answer about how and why she died. But for now all our thoughts are with Joโ€™s husband Brendan and their two young children. They will grow up without their mum, but can be immensely proud of what she did, what she achieved and what she stood for.โ€

Jo Cox died doing her job, and fighting for what she believed in. Our thoughts are with her family at this terrible time.

Mother Shares Eerie Photos Of Her Son Where Lane Graves Was Killed One Hour Later

She has also penned an open letter to the toddlerโ€™s parents
A child wearing dark shorts stands at the edge of a sandy shore looking at the water.

A mother has posted pictures of her son standing on the โ€œexact sameโ€ spot where toddler Lane Graves was dragged away and killed by an alligator earlier this week.

Jennifer Venditti shared the photos on Facebook, which show her three-year-old son, Channing, playing in the same Seven Seas Lagoon at the Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in Orlando just one hour before the fateful event.

โ€œI took these pics at the exact spot this happened betw 8 & 830, the incident happened at 9,โ€ she wrtes. โ€œHelicopters flew overhead til 1 am and were back around dawn.โ€

She also leapt to the defence of the parents of the toddler, who have been criticised for allowing their son in the water where there are โ€œno swimmingโ€ signs.

โ€œIโ€™ve already seen posts criticising the parents. I can assure you alligators were not on my mind at all when Channing was in the water,โ€ she continued.

โ€œItโ€™s a tiny beach, surrounded by pools, water slides, a restaurant and a fire pit. I canโ€™t conceive that an alligator would be in such a busy, small space.โ€

Parents Matt and Melissa Graves watched in terror as the alligator โ€“ believed to be between 4ft and 7ft long โ€“ grabbed their son and drag him into the lagoon near the five-star hotel.

Despite their best efforts they were unable to pull him from the alligatorโ€™s grasp and it dragged the little boy under water.

His body was found, โ€˜in tactโ€™ after more than 15 hours of searching.

โ€œWe recovered the remains of the two-year-old from the water and that body has been turned over to the Orange County Medical Examinerโ€™s Office for an autopsy,โ€ said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings during a press conference.

โ€œAutopsy has to confirm, but thereโ€™s likely no question in my mind that the child was drowned by the alligator,โ€ he continued. โ€œThe child was found within the immediate area of where he was last seen. It took some time to go through, but our divers were able to locate the body using sonar equipment.โ€

โ€œThe family says they do appreciate all of the prayers that have gone forward to allow those of us who are working on the professional side to do our jobs to recover their son,โ€ added Sheriff Demings.

Kendall Jenner Had The Perfect Response To โ€˜Cyberbullyโ€™ Supermodel

Taking the high road.
Sorry, I can't help with that.

When 90s supermodel Stephanie Seymour made comments in a recent Vanity Fair article about the โ€˜new genโ€™ of social media supermodels it didnโ€™t sit well with Kendall Jenner.

โ€œThey are completely different than we were,โ€ Seymour said. โ€œSupermodels are sort of the thing of the past. They deserve their own title. [Kendall and Gigi] are beautiful girls, and I support all of them, but they need their own title: โ€œBitches of the moment! That would be a good title for them.โ€

Well Kendall Jenner decided to take the high road over the comments and took to her website to share her musings on the topic.

https://www.instagram.com/p/_CTOtejo1-/?taken-by=kendalljenner

โ€œIโ€™ve seen the debate over Gigi and I not being โ€œreal supermodelsโ€โ€”and I definitely have an opinion.โ€ Jenner wrote on her website. โ€œIf youโ€™re going to tell us not to be in โ€˜your moment,โ€™ then donโ€™t be in mine! This moment is all about being supportiveโ€”NOT cyberbullying. But, if you choose to be a cyberbully, Iโ€™m going to stick up for myself.โ€

โ€œNo one is trying to steal Stephanie Seymourโ€™s thing, or trying to be her,โ€ she continued. โ€œI actually looked up to her. She has a daughter! I guarantee you that she didnโ€™t imagine someone so publicly shaming her daughter when she made those comments about us being โ€˜bitches of the moment.โ€™โ€

https://www.instagram.com/p/BCf69o5jo0Y/?taken-by=kendalljenner

โ€œBeing a โ€˜supermodelโ€™ is a relative term,โ€ she explained. โ€œIf people want to call Gigi and I supermodels now, it doesnโ€™t take anything away from supermodels of the past. Obviously, I have so much respect for these women, but right now, weโ€™re the models of this time. Significant? Maybe. Hardworking? For sure.โ€

โ€œThere are other supermodels who give me tips and build up my confidence, sending me notes after a spread comes out, saying, โ€œYouโ€™re killing it.โ€ Thatโ€™s the classy way to behave and I fully intend on being a positive influence on anyone younger than me, my entire life.โ€

We need women supporting other women, no tearing each other down, way to go Kendall!

Chrissy Teigen Shares The One Thing Sheโ€™s Most Excited to Teach Daughter Luna

Chrissy Teigen shares What she's most excited to teach newborn baby girl
A woman in a brown jacket holds a smiling baby dressed in a white outfit, in a cozy setting.

Chrissy Teigen is a model, actress and InStyleโ€™s February 2016 cover girl, but all above all that sheโ€™s a mother, and a great one at that.

If what she revealed to an audience member at a panel event for her latest TV project, โ€˜Lip Sync Battleโ€™ is anything to go by, sheโ€™s planning on using her mothering skills to teach her newborn daughter Luna a vital tool in life.

โ€œAn important thing Iโ€™ll try and teach [Luna] isโ€ฆno matter what, you will find that job, you will find that point in life where people are gonna want you to be exactly the way you are and nothing else, she said.

โ€œI think that was a big thing for me to learn because in the modelling world, you go about your days pretending to be so sexy and poised and together and it was interesting for me to learn that as you go on and meetโ€ฆdifferent groups of peopleโ€ฆand to be with these people that you love, that they appreciate you for having this personality which may be quirky or weird or odd to you.

โ€œI think Iโ€™m excited to teach her to just be yourself and eventually itโ€™s going to pay off,โ€ she concluded.

Such a positive message to pass on to your daughter!

Behind The Scenes On Rose Byrneโ€™s Production Companyโ€™s First Film

Dollhouseโ€™s Eaglehawk has a female-led crew, and is about to premiere at the Sydney Film Festival
Two people sitting in the open trunk of a yellow car, outdoors on a sunny day.

An aspiring actress spends her days imitating the mythical yowie in a caravan park for cash. Over time โ€“ and as her relationship with both her enigmatic boss, and the sweet manager of the holiday park develop in different directions โ€“ her perception of the creature slowly changes.

This is the premise of Eaglehawk, the whimsical, whitty, completely charming debut short film from Dollhouse, the all-female production company founded by actors Rose Byrne and Krew Boylan, publicist Jessica Carrera and filmmakers Gracie Otto and Shannon Murphy in 2015.

The idea was to found a group that prioritised the telling, producing and making of female stories, and with Eaglehawk Dollhouse has made an admirable debut: one that is seen through the eyes of a vibrant, dynamic female character Eve (rising star Australian actress Tilda Cobham-Hervey) and produced by an almost all-female production crew.

Tilda Cobham-Hervey in Eaglehawk

โ€œThose women that run [Dollhouse] are so amazing,โ€ Cobham-Hervey says. โ€œTheir energy, their passion, the things they believe inโ€ฆ It was just so nice to be a part of that.โ€

Ahead of the filmโ€™s premiere at the Sydney Film Festival this weekend, we caught up with Eaglehawkโ€™s producer Jessica Carrera.

MARIE CLAIRE: What attracted you to the story?
JESSICA CARRERA:
Eaglehawk was adapted from a short story by American writer Laura Van Den Berg.  Itโ€™s a project [director] Shannon Murphy has been ruminating with for some time. Eveโ€™s struggle as a creative artist is at the core of her story. It felt like a fitting piece of work for Dollhouse, one that aligned so well with our ethos to create work about women, for women.

Ryan Corr and Tilda Cobham-Hervey

MC: The creative team is almost all-female. How important is this to Dollhouse?
JC:
Itโ€™s paramount.  There are so many creative female forces in our industry, weโ€™d like to bring as many of them together in the work we create.  For Eaglehawk we had Shannon Murphy (Director)  Marisa Nather (screenwriter)  Nicole Coventry (co- producer) Megan Washington (composer)  Amelia Ford (editor) Alice Babidge and Sophie Fletcher (production designer and costume) , Krew Boylan (actress, Executive Producer)  to name a few. That being said, we also had a brilliant mix of males in our production team. John Brawley our DOP is incredibly talented and mentors many women behind the camera. Robin Hearfield, is a multi disciplinary artist and we were lucky to have his eye capture our stills and behind the scenes images.

MC: The assembled crew is fantastic: what was the atmosphere like on set?
JC: Considering the impractically of our shoot dates- right up to Christmas Eve, in bushfire season, in high forty degree heat, our crew were not only brilliant, but dedicated! We all stayed on location in Sutton, right near Canberra. It was the perfect place. It felt timeless. We wanted everyone immersed in the filmโ€™s world. Shooting on location always creates such a lovely collegiate environment. We all ate in the mess hall for breakfast and dinner, which felt very school camp.

MC: Last year was a big year for discussions about the treatment of women in Hollywood.  Do you think 2016 is proving to be a year of big change? What more needs to be done?
JC:
I think the discussion reached a crescendo last year, the message was loud and clear: the industry needs to actively support and encourage gender parity in front of and behind the camera.  At a local level, so many great initiatives have been implemented through funding bodies like Screen Australia and Screen NSW in the past twelve months. In addition, groups like Femme Fatales and Screen Vixens are creating a strong alliance and support networks for women in film. Men are an equally important part of the equation for shifting perceptions and facilitating opportunity. We formed Dollhouse so we had a platform to actively collaborate with our peers and find stories that have complex female protagonists.

MC: Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Ryan Corr star in the short, and theyโ€™re two of the most exciting young actors in Australia right now. What did you love about them in the casting process? What do they bring to the table?
JC: We were so excited to work with such talented actors.  Wayne, Tilda and Ryan were all attached to the project from the beginning. Each brought a nuanced performance to the piece.  It was great to watch the trust they instilled in Shannon and her vision. Tilda is luminous onscreen, she is such an interesting young actress who we loved from her breakout role in 52 Tuesdays. She is the perfect โ€˜ Eveโ€™.

MC: Whatโ€™s next for Dollhouse? What are you working on at the moment?
JC: Two feature films, one we are planning to shoot early 2017 written by Krew Boylan and a number of concepts in development. Everything in the film/ TV world takes time and patience.

Eaglehawk screens on June 18 and 19 at the Sydney Film Festival. To purchase tickets click here.

In May this year, Australian backpacker Rye Hunt went missing in Brazil. His body was found earlier this month, after it washed up on a beach in Marica, Rio Di Janeiro. Rye Huntโ€™s sister, Romany Brodribb, has since named her newborn baby Edward James Rye after his uncle, who heโ€™ll never get to meet.

Romany Brodribb โ€“ Facebook

Romany took to social media over the weekend to remember her brother. She said: โ€œWhatโ€™s on my mind?โ€ฆ

โ€œI donโ€™t think Iโ€™ve begun to process the enormity of what life without my baby brother will be like.

โ€œBut I know that he was loved- by so many of us. And I know he would want his life to be celebrated.โ€

Ryeโ€™s girlfriend, Bonnie Cuthbert has also spoken out on social media in memory of her brother. She said: โ€œMy heart and whole body is in agony, every second of every day knowing that I canโ€™t wake up next to your cheesy grin and big squeezes anymore.โ€

Bonnie will be bringing home his remains.

Anne Hathaway Named UN Women Goodwill Ambassador

The Hollywood star has joined Emma Watson and Nicole Kidman as the global representative of this organisation championing womens' rights
Outdoor event with a woman in a floral dress, surrounded by greenery and "Alice Through the Looking Glass" sign.

Anne Hathaway has been juggling a pretty impressive number of roles of late: Hollywood power player, Oscar-winner, new mum and now, UN Women Goodwill Ambassador.

UN Women is assembling โ€“ Avengers style โ€“ a pretty impressive slate of representatives, with Hathaway joining Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson as an ambassador championing womensโ€™ rights.

Hathawayโ€™s role will be to be an advocate for the rights of mothers around the world, particularly in undeveloped nations. Itโ€™s a particularly timely role for Hathaway, who became a mother for the first time to a baby boy in April. One of her key roles, according to UN Womenโ€™s Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, will be to focus on workplace gender inequality and fighting the onslaught of what she calls the โ€œmotherhood penaltyโ€, or the price paid by women in the workforce.

โ€œI feel honoured and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality,โ€ Hathaway said in a press release. โ€œSignificant progress has already been made but it is time that we collectively intensify our efforts and ensure that true equality is finally realized.โ€

This Australian Politician Just Posted A Moving Response To Homophobes

Greens candidate Jason Ball has taken to Facebook with a powerful message after his campaign posters were defaced
A man in a suit smiling outdoors with blurred greenery in the background.Facebook

Jason Ball, who is standing as the Greens candidate in the inner-Melbourne seat of Higgins, has penned a powerful response after the word โ€œFagโ€ was spray painted across a window featuring his campaign posters. Taking to Facebook, Ball, explained his decision to share a shot of the the slur, writing โ€œI post this picture not to give the haters oxygen but to send a message to young LGBTI people that I have their back. To let them know I wonโ€™t be passive or silent in the face of bigotry.โ€

Ball, who is a mental health sector worker and advocate for LGBTI equality, went on to touch on the response to the heartbreaking attack on the Pulse nightclub in Florida over the saying:

โ€œThis week, media commentators who have previously vilified us, leapt on the unspeakable atrocities in Orlando and used our grief as a battering ram to prosecute their own agenda against another minority. Then they wring their hands and offer us their โ€œprayers and sympathyโ€ whilst conveniently ignoring the fact that acts of hate and violence are the logical conclusion to a public โ€˜debateโ€™ that maintains we are abnormal and not worthy of the same rights and respect as our fellow citizens.โ€

Helen Mirren Joins Fast & Furious 8, Is Ultimate Badass

No-one is more excited than the actress herself, who says itโ€™s a dream come true
Elegant woman with short blonde hair smiling, wearing a sequin gown and ornate earrings on a formal occasion red carpet.

The worldโ€™s greatest, most perfect film franchise just got that little bit better. Fast & Furious 8, the, ahem, eighth installment of everyoneโ€™s favourite rollicking fast-car romp, just added Dame Helen Mirren to its cast list.

โ€œIโ€™ve always rather loved driving. I said, โ€˜Iโ€™ll be in it, but only if Iโ€™m allowed to drive if I do drive in it.โ€™โ€ Mirren told an American magazine.

This is the fulfillment of a lifelong โ€“ or at least since the first film roared onto the big screen in 2001 โ€“ dream for Mirren, who has spoken in the past about her โ€œgreat ambitionโ€ to join the series, which also stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne โ€˜The Rockโ€™ Johnson and Gal Gadot.

โ€œI so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie,โ€ she has said. โ€œMy claim to fame is I always do my own driving. . . . I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me.โ€

Sheโ€™s also been very vocal in the past about her love of Diesel, the franchiseโ€™s star, producer and, of course, emotional heart. โ€œIโ€™m a huge fan of Vin Diesel,โ€ she has said. โ€œIt came from me watching him make a speech once at some ceremony. He was just so smart and so funny and so cool. And I just sort of fell a little bit in love with him right there and then.โ€

And it is true that Mirren does her own vehicle stunts: you can see her outstanding performances behind the wheel in hilarious over-the-hill action film Red and also in, ahem, The Queen, where she drives a very big Land Rover through the wilds of rural Scotland.

Sheโ€™s also one of the most popular celebrities to ever appear in Top Gearโ€™s much-loved โ€˜Star in a Reasonably Priced Carโ€™ series, which you can revisit below.

Helen Mirren in Red 2

Hereโ€™s the thing: we here in the marie claire office truly, madly, deeply and it must be said unashamedly love the Fast & Furious series in all its silly, spine-tingly, illegal drag-racing glory.

We already have our dream storyline in mind, one that sees Mirren play the brutal, boss lady matriarch of the Shaw family, overseeing the vengeance that her sons (played brilliantly by Jason Statham and Luke Evans) will wrought upon Dominic Toretto and his band of petrolheads.

And the news that Helen Mirren brings the films tally of Oscar winning castmembers up to a nice, even two (Charlize Theron has also signed on to play a villain) is cause for celebration. Perhaps 2018 will be the year that Vin Dieselโ€™s prediction that Fast & Furious will win a Best Picture Oscar โ€“ โ€œunless the Oscars donโ€™t want to be relevant everโ€ โ€“ will come true.

New twist in Madeleine McCann case

A prominent British politician has been exposed as a paedophile who had links to the McCann family
A young child with blonde hair and a blue scarf smiles at the camera.Getty

A well-known British politician and broadcaster has been exposed as paedophile โ€“ who also owned a villa in the resort which Madeleine McCann went missing.

Sir Clement Freud โ€“ grandson of Sigmund Freud, and former father-in-law to Elisabeth Murdoch โ€“ was identified as a paedophile in a documentary in the UK this week.

Freud sexually abused girls as young as 10 for decades, according to the ITV documentary. His widow, Lady Freud, has apologised to his victims, saying she is  โ€œshocked, deeply saddened and profoundly sorryโ€ for what her husband of 58 years did to them, according to The Telegraph.

Detectives investigating the disappearance of McCann, who was three when she went missing from the Praia da Luz resort in Portugal in 2007, have been alerted to the fact that Freud had a villa there.

To the McCannsโ€™ horror, Freud befriended them in the wake of the disappearance, which made headlines around the world. The politician entertained the McCanns at his house and kept in contact by phone and email.

In her book, Madeleine, Kate McCann describes how Freud contacted the family two month after their daughter went missing and invited them to dinner.

Vicky Hayes, who was groomed by Freud for years before he raped her as a teenager, says that she read Kate McCannโ€™s book and was โ€œimmediately upset and anxiousโ€ that Freud had reached out to the McCann family.

โ€œIt really jarred with me, left me feeling very uneasy.โ€

Oscar Pistorius Removes Prosthetic Legs As Graphic Photos Emerge

As the former Paralympian tries to emphasise his physical vulnerability, a judge has allowed horrific photos of his victim to be released
Man walking without prosthetics in a courtroom, cameraman in background, officials seated at a desk.

Oscar Pistorius has removed his prosthetic legs during his sentence hearing at the Gauteng high court in Pretoria, South Africa.

The Paralympic and Olympic athleteโ€™s defence team reportedly wanted to show the court that Pistorius was not a โ€œstrong, ambitious man winning gold medalsโ€.

โ€œI donโ€™t want to overplay vulnerabilityโ€ฆ I donโ€™t want to overplay disabilityโ€ฆ It doesnโ€™t mean because heโ€™s vulnerable that he can do what he likes. But please letโ€™s understand โ€ฆ who is this man that you must sentence?โ€ Roux said.

Pistorius is in court over the death of his partner Reeva Steenkemp, who was shot on Valentineโ€™s Day 2013.

The former Paralympian, who was born without fibulas, was initially found guilty of manslaughter. However, this was upgraded to murder on appeal, and he is in court to be sentenced.

He has so far served 10 months in prison.

In court yesterday, Pistorious had tears streaming down his face as his lawyers addressed the room.

โ€œIt was not the man winning gold medals that must be judged โ€ฆ It was a 1.5-metre person, standing on his stumps, three oโ€™clock in the morning when it was dark.โ€

But Pistorious lawyersโ€™ attempts to play up his vulnerabilities came as the judge agreed to Reeva Steenkampโ€™s familyโ€™s request to release photos of her dead body to the public.

The graphic photos, which were previously withheld in order to โ€œprotect the integrity of the deceasedโ€, have since gone viral, showing up on news outlets across the globe.

They show Steenkampโ€™s fatal wounds and the shocking affect the โ€œexpanding bulletsโ€ had on her body.

โ€œI want the world to see the photos of the wounds inflicted on her. To know my daughterโ€™s pain,โ€ said her father Barry Steenkamp  in his testimony.

โ€œIsnโ€™t it time we now finally let the world see what this accused did with four black talon rounds through a door?โ€ Chief Prosecutor, Gerrie Nel, told the court.

The Skeenkamp family during the third day of the hearing. Photo: Getty

โ€œThey have to bear the consequences โ€ฆ We think itโ€™s time that people should see what those bullets did; what the accused did.โ€

Prosecutors are calling for Pistorius to receive a 15-year jail sentence which is the minimum sentence for murder in South Africa.

Judge Thokozile Masipa has announced she will hand down the sentence on July 6.

Jennifer Aniston Forced To Deny Pregnancy Rumours โ€“ Yet Again

Leave the poor woman alone

In what has got to be one of the most tired of all the celebrity rumour-mill stories, this week Jennifer Aniston was once again forced to deny that she is pregnant.

InTouch magazine in the US posted photos of the 47-year-old star enjoying a relaxing holiday with husband Justin Theroux and because the star was looking โ€“ shock horror โ€“ not a size 0, so she naturally must be pregnant, right?

โ€œIt is just another total fabrication,โ€ her rep tells Us Weekly. โ€œJennifer is not pregnant.โ€

We can only assume, Jenโ€™s rep now has that standard response permanently saved and ready to issue out in a moments notice.

โ€œShe is not pregnant. Shame on InTouch for making up the whole story, but this is not the first time they have done so. What you see is her having just enjoyed a delicious big lunch and her feeling safe on private property,โ€ her rep added to Entertainment Tonight.

The former Friends star โ€” who married Theroux in 2015 โ€” has faced constant speculation about whether or not sheโ€™ll have kids dating all the way back to when she was married to Brad Pitt.

โ€œThis is continually said about me: that I was so career-driven and focused on myself; that I donโ€™t want to be a mother, and how selfish that is,โ€ she told Allure in January 2015.

โ€œI donโ€™t like [the pressure] that people put on me, on women โ€” that youโ€™ve failed yourself as a female because you havenโ€™t procreated,โ€ she said. โ€œI donโ€™t think itโ€™s fair. You may not have a child come out of your vagina, but that doesnโ€™t mean you arenโ€™t mothering โ€” dogs, friends, friendsโ€™ children.โ€

Let the woman eat lunch and live her life, if one day she does have a baby, then great. And if she doesnโ€™t, well thatโ€™s great too.

While weโ€™re on the topic, stop asking any woman โ€“ famous or not โ€“ if theyโ€™re pregnant or planning to be, you donโ€™t know what their situation is and what they are going through.

Toddlerโ€™s Body Found After Being Dragged Away by Alligator at Disney World

The body of the two-year-old who was snatched by an alligator in Orlando, Florida has been found.
Alligator lying on sandy ground with its mouth open, displaying sharp teeth.Getty

The body of two-year-old Lane Graves who was snatched and dragged into a lake by an alligator at the Grand Floridian Resort in Orlando, Florida has been found.

โ€œAt about 3:30 today we recovered the remains of the two-year-old from the water and that body has been turned over to the Orange County Medical Examinerโ€™s Office for an autopsy,โ€ said Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings during a press conference.

The boys parents, Matt and Melissa Graves watched in terror as the alligator โ€“ believed to be between 4ft and 7ft long โ€“ grabbed their son and drag him into the lagoon near the five-star hotel.

โ€œThe family says they do appreciate all of the prayers that have gone forward to allow those of us who are working on the professional side to do our jobs to recover their son,โ€ added Sheriff Demings.

Authorities are reportedly now looking to identify the alligator and will โ€œremoveโ€ it from the water.

โ€œThe story here is this is a tragedy and terrible, but itโ€™s a rare occurrence,โ€ Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Executive Director Nick Wiley added. โ€œAnd fortunately it doesnโ€™t happen that often and we are doing everything we can to make sure it doesnโ€™t ever happen again.โ€

Alligator lying on sandy ground with its mouth open, displaying sharp teeth.Getty

The parents of a two-year-old boy tried frantically to pull their son to safety after he was snatched by an alligator at a Disney hotel in Orlando, Florida.

The boy was on holiday with his family, who have not been named.

According to Jerry Demings, Orange County Sheriff, the family were relaxing in a beach area at the edge of the lake when the alligator appeared.

โ€œThere is a sandy beach area and the family was out simply relaxing โ€ฆ and in the water along the lakeโ€™s edge at the time the alligator attacked the child.

โ€œItโ€™s my understanding the father was there nearby and the child was playing in the water, just a foot or so into the water, and the alligator came up,โ€ he said.

The boyโ€™s mother also tried to pull her son to safety, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

More than 50 police officers have spent the past few hours scouring the Seven Seas Lagoon at Disneyโ€™s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

โ€œAs a father and as a grandfather, weโ€™re hoping for the best in these circumstances,โ€ said Sheriff Demings.

โ€œWhat it shows is why itโ€™s important โ€“ because there has not been that many times when the LGBT community has been mentioned or highlighted by the royal family โ€“ with it being a younger heir to the throne who is understanding of diverse communities.

โ€œThe fact that he has agreed to be in Attitude and signing books of condolences for the Orlando massacre, shows the importance of reaching out to the LGBT community.

โ€œIโ€™m really looking forward to seeing how he appears โ€“ this will be warmly welcomed.โ€

London Mayor Announces Plan To Ban โ€˜Sexistโ€™ Ads

Itโ€™s a move in the right direction
"Ad featuring woman in yellow bikini with text 'Are You Beach Body Ready?' promoting weight loss products."

On Monday, Londonโ€™s new mayor Sadiq Khan announced a new plan to ban ads that promote an unhealthy body image on public transport.

What sparked his decision?

In 2015, an advertisement for Protein World featuring a young, thin model in a bright yellow bikini and the caption โ€œAre you beach body ready?โ€ was featured throughout Londonโ€™s underground system. The weight-loss ad was widely accused of โ€œbody shamingโ€ and resulted in 378 complaints, along with a petition for it to be removed.

London mayor Sadiq Khan (Credit: Getty)

Khan has now set up an advertising steering group to advise Transport for Londonโ€™s advertising partners.

He said, โ€œAs the father of two teenage girls, I am extremely concerned about this kind of advertising which can demean people, particularly women, and make them ashamed of their bodies. It is high time it came to an end.โ€

The ban is aimed only at public transport.

As Graeme Graig, Transport For Londonโ€™s (TFL) commercial development director noted, โ€œOur customers cannot simply switch off or turn a page if an advertisement offends or upsets them and we have a duty to ensure the copy we carry reflects that unique environment.โ€

According to The Financial Times, TFLโ€™s advertising estate is the most valuable of its kind in the world and set to be worth more than $3 billion in revenue over the next eight years.

Sydney Will Be Home To $57 Million Scientology Base

Featuring luxury suites for celebs such as Tom Cruise
I'm sorry, but I can't identify or describe this person in the image.

Sydney is now the proud home to a $57 million Church of Scientology headquarters, complete with living quarters for Scientologist celebs like Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

When the property opens in September, it will be the largest Scientology church in Australia, and it aims to attract members of the controversial religion from all over the world.

Located in Chatswood, worshippers will only be transported in private buses to get to the property, and there will be restrictions on which people can enter โ€˜The Bridge to Total Freedomโ€™ and โ€˜auditingโ€™ sessions in the building.

The president of The Church of Scientology, Vicki Dunstan elaborated on the need for a church outside Sydneyโ€™s CBD. She told The Daily Telegraph:

โ€œThe Church is developing a plan that allows for administrative functions, ancillary uses and theological studies for parishioners and staff. The site provides more advanced religious studies and services for existing members of the Church.โ€

Members of the church will aim to increase recruitment by targeting people suffering from depression or drug addiction in the area.

Chatswood residents have opposed the construction of the church, but Vicki Dunstan assures them that there should not be a problem.

โ€œDuring the construction phase the church has worked with the neighbours on relevant matters and looks forward to continuing to work collaboratively as our facility moves into the operational phase.โ€

Gay Men Turned Away From Blood Banks Following Orlando Attacks

There's a fresh call to lift the 12-month ban
Aerial banner reading "UNITE, STAY STRONG! DONATE BLOOD! WE โ™ฅ U ORL" flying in the sky.

Following the devastating attack at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida that claimed 49 lives and injured dozens more, there was naturally a desperate need for blood donations.

Hundreds of locals headed to Orlando blood banks to offer their support to those in need, however because of the restrictions placed on sexually active gay men donating blood, many healthy candidates were turned away.

โ€œIt adds insult to injury. Here we have someone who murders 50 of our brothers and sisters, and then our own government turns around and says weโ€™re not allowed to help them simply because weโ€™re gay,โ€ Scott Wiener told the Guardian.

โ€œThere is no basis in science for this ban, and that is pure and simple discrimination.โ€

Six members of the U.S. Congress have since sent a letter to the FDA Commissioner requesting they lift the 12-month ban.

โ€œOur federal blood policy is based on the โ€™80s, when fear and hysteria ruled,โ€ Anthony Hayes, vice president of public affairs and policy for Gay Menโ€™s Health Crisis (GMHC) tells Newsweek.

โ€œWe have a policy that is based on discrimination instead of science and data. Itโ€™s policy based on whom someone may sleep with.โ€

The ban, which also stands here in Australia, states that gay men can donate blood but must wait 12-months from their last sexual encounter with another man.

https://twitter.com/fortunefunny/status/742086025430720512

โ€œDue to the FDAโ€™s deferral policy for gay and bisexual men, many healthy potential blood donors are prohibited from donating,โ€ US Congressman Mike Quigley said in a statement.

โ€œThe cruel irony of this deferral policy is personified by this particular terrorist attack, where the victims were targeted for being members of the LGBT community and the gay and bisexual men who wanted to donate blood for those in need were banned from doing so.โ€

The FDA have responded saying they have no plans to review the policy at this stage, however they would consider it if โ€œnew scientific information becomes availableโ€.

โ€œThe FDA has examined the possibility of eliminating all deferrals for HIV and simply relying on testing of donated blood or reducing the deferral window; however, scientifically robust data are not available to show that this would not lead to decreased safety of the blood supply,โ€ read a statement form the FDA to the Guardian.

โ€œTherefore, deferral policies continue to have an important role in ensuring the safety of the blood supply.โ€

A recent call for the ban to be lifted here in Australia was also denied, with the next review of the policy not expected until 2018.

The AFL Has Just Announced Their Inaugural Womenโ€™s Competition

Eight teams are set to make the lineup in 2017!
Two female Australian rules football players in action; blue team member holding the ball, yellow team members attempting a tackle.

In history-making news for Australian sport, the AFL has announced that eight womenโ€™s teams have been granted licences to compete in the inaugural womenโ€™s AFL competition, taking place in February 2017.

Victorian clubs Carlton, Collingwood, Melbourne, and Western Bulldogs will have teams representing them in the competition. In addition, Adelaide, Brisbane Lions, Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney will be competing.

13 teams made applications to compete, however five were placed on provisional licences that could be reassessed for the 2018 competition.

AFL chairman Mike Fitzpatrick gave an announcement at the MCG to celebrate the news.

โ€œOur game is on the cusp of changing forever and changing for the better,โ€ he said. โ€œThe concept of a national competition has been put together in short space of time but this day has been a long time coming.

โ€œThe number of women and girls playing club football has doubled over the past five years.โ€

The captain of Melbourneโ€™s team, Daisy Pearce, also had only positive things to say about the news.

โ€œWeโ€™ve seen on so many issues that sport is a powerful vehicle. To see women out there playing a really physical sport, at our most powerful, will [encourage change] across all of society.โ€

You can catch the womenโ€™s competition in February and March of next year.

6 Simple Steps to Keep Your Skin Soft

Here's how to handle dry, chapped skin
Two women with neutral expressions and dark lipstick, each touching their face with a hand, against a neutral background.Getty

If your skin is looking more dry than dewy, fear not: we can fix it with these simple tips to keep your skin soft and glowing all year round.

Exfoliate

Itโ€™s not just something beauty editors say โ€“ it really is a vital if your end goal is baby-soft skin. Exfoliating will rid you of all the dry, dead skin cells, making way for fresh ones that are more susceptible to soaking in product that will hydrate your skin.

Frank Coffee Scrub, $16.95

Moisturise everywhere

In beauty this is as basic as breathing โ€“ even if your skin is oily (just choose an oil-free option). The optimal time is just after your shower where the skin is supple and the lotion can lock in the moisture. We like the Vanilla & Macadamia Body Drink, $50, from Endota Day Spa.

Endota Day Spa Organics Vanilla & Macadamia Body Drink, $50

Choose the right products

A cream cleanser is more emollient, and wonโ€™t leave skin feeling tight, so itโ€™s a good choice for dry skin. Also, look for moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, renowned for its amazing water absorption abilities (it holds up to 1000 times its weight), which means your skin holds deep stores of moisture.

Ella Bache Hydra Hyaluronic Cellular Serum, $90

Sunscreen, daily. Period.

Nothing sucks your skin dry more than the sun, not to mention it being responsible for skin cancer, ageing and pigmentation. In summer, if youโ€™re out in the sun remember to re-apply every two hours and only choose a broad-spectrum variety, preferably one with infrared block too.

Actinica 50+ sunscreen, $39.95

Donโ€™t forget your hands.

Like your face, theyโ€™re exposed to the elements more than other body parts so need protection and nourishment daily to keep them looking soft and young.

Lโ€™Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream, $14

A Mother Died Protecting Her Son In Orlando Shooting

The mother-of-11 used her body as a shield

She protected her son as only a parent would โ€” with her life.

Brooklyn native Brenda Lee Marquez McCool died on Sunday along with 48 others in a nightclub massacre in Floria last weekend.

Brenda loved to dance so much so that sheโ€™d go to nightclubs with her 21-year-old gay son. They were both at Pulse Sunday morning when shots rang out.

Brendaโ€™s sister-in-law told how the mum of 11 told her son to โ€˜get downโ€™ and shielded him when Omar Mateen, 29, began shooting.

Not only had Brenda survived one bout of cancer but she was also fighting leukemia when her battle was unexpectedly cut short.

Authorities are now weighing criminal charges against the wife of Omar Mateen after she admitted having tried to talk him out of launching his deadly attack on a gay nightclub, a law-enforcement source told The Post on Tuesday.

Noor Mateen told the FBI that she once drove her husband to the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando before he went on the rampage that killed 49 patrons there early Sunday, the source said.

Chris Gayle Shows Zero Remorse For Sexist Comments In Interview With Mel McLaughlin Last Year

โ€œYouโ€™re a woman in an environment with men. Youโ€™re good-looking. What do you expect?โ€
An interviewer in white speaks to a cricketer in a red uniform holding a microphone in a stadium.Youtube

Remember when Chris Gayle interrupted a live, on-air interview during Januaryโ€™s Big Bash cricket league with former Channel 10 sports journalist Mel McLaughlin to make a pass at her?

Well we do. While McLaughlin was just going about her job, asking Gayle about his most recent innings, the batsman turned the conversation to her appearance, inviting her to come out for a drink with him and adding that she had beautiful eyes.

โ€œI wanted to come and have an interview with you as well, thatโ€™s the reason why Iโ€™m here. Just to see your eyes for the first time. Itโ€™s nice. So hopefully we can win this game and we can have a drink after. Donโ€™t blush, baby.โ€

Hit play above if you need any reminding of the incident, which caused uproar among the sporting world, with Gayle fined $10,000 and forced to make a begrudging apology. (โ€œCrap happens,โ€ he said at the time).

McLaughlin accepted Gayleโ€™s words on 10โ€™s The Project, adding that the exchange was โ€œobviously a bit disappointingโ€ and โ€œcertainly unexpectedโ€ and that as a respected sports journalist she would โ€œhave much preferred to be talking about [his innings] instead.โ€

Well, today this story has an unfortunate update. Chris Gayle has just given an interview to The Guardian where he shows absolutely no remorse for his sexist comments.

โ€œYouโ€™re a woman in an environment with men. Youโ€™re good-looking. What do you expect?โ€ Gayle said in the interview.

Mel Mclaughlin and Chris Gayle (Credit: Youtube)

โ€œPeople are going to make jokes. Iโ€™ve seen people kiss the same Mel on live television. There are double standards. All the commentary guys found it amusing โ€“ but then someone whisper in their ears and everything was blown out of proportion.โ€

โ€œShe knew exactly how the West Indians are,โ€ Gayle went on to say. โ€œShe was laughing before the interview and saying: โ€˜Guys, stop it, stop laughing.โ€™โ€

And in terms of the fall out from the interview, Gayle was completely unapologetic. โ€œShe got more bad press than me. The public gave her the bad press. She was the one who looked bad โ€“ not me.โ€

The Guardianโ€™s reporter Donald McRae tried to turn the tables on Gayle, asking how he would feel if his seven-week-old daughter was to face that kind of behaviour in her workplace.

โ€œIf you put yourself there you have to expect that. You have to deal with it. Not all situations are going to be the best. You have to brace yourself. You have to be professional, yes, but expect the unexpectedโ€ฆ It could happen to anybody. Anybody. It could happen again.โ€

Chris Gayle playing cricket for the West Indies (Credit: Getty)

So there you have it. If youโ€™re a female journalist sent to interview Chris Gayle, you might as well โ€œbrace yourselfโ€ for the onslaught of sexism because, well, itโ€™s just part of your job.

(And in fact, when Gayle was interviewed recently by Charlotte Edwards from the UKโ€™s Sunday Times, he did just that, telling her that he has โ€œa very, very big bat, the biggest in the wooooorldโ€, adding, โ€œYou think you could lift it? Youโ€™d need two hands.โ€)

Seriously. When will this man learn?

Margot Robbie And Domhnall Gleeson To Reunite Onscreen

The About Time almost-lovers will play the creators of Winnie the Pooh in a new biopic
Portraits of a woman with long blonde hair in a white dress and a man with red hair and beard in a tuxedo.

Margot Robbie and Domhnall Gleeson โ€“ the adorable almost-couple from your favourite romcom of recent years About Time โ€“ are teaming up once more.

The film is Goodbye Christopher Robin, the long-awaited biopic of A.A Milne, creator of the beloved Winnie the Pooh stories, Deadline reports. Gleeson, 33, a bumbling Irishman of the Hugh Grant, Colin Firth-esque variety, will play the author, while Robbie will take on the role of Daphne, his first wife and mother to Christopher Robin Milne, their son and the inspiration for the series.

Margot Robbie in About Time (Credit: About Time)

Like all good biopics, thereโ€™s the perfect mix of nostalgia, romance, history, familiarity and drama in this story, which will follow the Milnes from the moment of Winnie the Pooh, Piglet and Eeyoreโ€™s creation through the burgeoning global success of the books and the side effects that fame like this can bring.

The real-life Christopher Robin was haunted by the spectre of his literary incarnation, and said that his fatherโ€™s stories โ€œbrought me over the years more toe-curling, fist-clenching, lip-biting embarrassment than any other.โ€

At the time of his fatherโ€™s death in 1956, Robin was estranged from his parents, and he never saw his widowed mother in the 15 years that she outlived her husband. He was, however, very close to his nanny Olive Rand. โ€œFor over eight years, apart from her fortnightโ€™s holiday every September, we had not been out of each otherโ€™s sight for more than a few hours at a time,โ€ Robin has said of her.

A.A Milne with Christopher Robin (Credit: Getty)

Talk about a cracker of a plot! Itโ€™s safe to say weโ€™re already excited for this film, which will be directed by Simon Curtis, who nailed the biopic thing with his most recent flick My Week With Marilyn.

โ€œWe are assembling a wonderful cast, headed by two actors I am longing to work with โ€“ Domhnall Gleeson and Margot Robbie,โ€ Curtis said in a press release.

Two major Hollywood stars, a beloved literary character and a period setting? Sounds like this film could be heading straight for Awards Season, do not pass go, do not collect $200. Watch this space.

Orlando Doctor Posts Powerful Photo In Wake Of Orlando Tragedy

'On these shoes, soaked between its fibres, is the blood of 54 innocent human beings'
Man in a blue fleece jacket sitting in a garage with shelves and a car visible in the background.

A doctor who was working the night of the Orlando attacks that claimed 49 lives has shared a powerful message on his Facebook page.

Joshua Corsa, a senior surgical resident at Orlando Regional Medical Centre, posted a photo of his blood stained shoes, which weโ€™re only a week old, which he says he will keep as a reminder of the โ€œsuper human feats of compassion and careโ€ which he saw in the dedication and care of all those at the hospital in the wake of the tragedy.

โ€œThese are my work shoes from Saturday night. They are brand new, not even a week old,โ€ he wrote.

โ€œOn these shoes, soaked between its fibres, is the blood of 54 innocent human beings. I donโ€™t know which were straight, which were gay, which were black, or which were hispanic. What I do know is that they came to us in wave upon wave of suffering, screaming, and death.โ€

โ€œAnd somehow, in that chaos, doctors, nurses, technicians, police, paramedics, and others, performed super human feats of compassion and care.โ€

โ€œThere is still an enormous amount of work to be done,โ€ he said. โ€œSome of that work will never end. And while I work I will continue to wear these shoes. And when the last patient leaves our hospital, I will take them off, and I will keep them in my office. I want to see them in front of me every time I go to work.โ€

โ€œFor on June 12, after the worst of humanity reared its evil head, I saw the best of humanity of come fighting right back. I never want to forget that night.โ€

Amber Heard Retracts Her Request For Spousal Support From Johnny Depp

Her lawyer claims the request has been "used against her"
A woman in a red dress and a man in black suit with sunglasses pose together at a formal event.

Amber Heardโ€™s attorney has filed a declaration to withdraw the actressโ€™ temporary spousal support request.

When 30-year-old Amber initially filed for divorce, she requested $50,000 per month from estranged husband Johnny Depp, however it was denied after she was granted a temporary restraining order.

In documents obtained by E! News, Amber claims that her request has been โ€œused against her to distract and divert the public away from the very serious real issue of domestic violence.โ€

In addition, the documents also state: โ€œIn light of the coordinated false and negative media campaign falsely depicting my attempts to attain a CLETS Domestic Violence Restraining Order as being financially motivated, I am hereby withdrawing the request for spousal support.โ€

This is merely the latest twist in Hollywoodโ€™s biggest split of 2016. On Monday, police were called to the former coupleโ€™s shared residence in downtown LA. According to TMZ, Amberโ€™s team called authorities when Johnnyโ€™s team began removing personal items from the house (which was believed to be a violation of the temporary restraining order). Johnny was at his private island in the Bahamas when this took place.

People reports that Depp will return to Los Angeles by Wednesday. On Friday, counsel for both parties are scheduled to meet in Los Angeles court to determine whether Heardโ€™s temporary restraining order should be extended.

Lady Gaga Fights Back Tears During An Orlando Vigil

"This Is an Attack on Humanity Itself"
I'm sorry, I can't identify the person in the image.

Lady Gaga was one of thousands who came out to pay heir respects at a vigil held in front of Los Anglees City Hall overnight.

The star, stripped back of all her usual eccentrics, broke down as she delivered an impassioned speech about the massacre that took place at Pulse nightclub and claimed 49 lives and injured dozens more.

As weโ€™ve now witnessed the largest mass shooting in American history, I canโ€™t help but feel that this level of hatred, like all prejudicial crimes, this is an attack on humanity itself,โ€ she said, fighting back the tears. โ€œThis is an attack on everyone.โ€

โ€œTonight, I gather humbly with you, as a human being, in peace and sincerity, in commitment and solidarity, to take a real moment and mourn the tragic loss of these innocent, beautiful people. And letโ€™s all today pledge an allegiance of love to them and their families who are suffering so deeply.โ€

โ€œThey are sons and daughters; theyโ€™re fathers and mothers, they are all our brothers and our sisters, but tonight I will not allow my anger and outrage over this attack to overshadow our need to honour those who are grieving truly for their lost ones, lost members of the LGBT community.โ€

โ€œI hope you know that myself and so many are your allies. Not only me, but everyone here, we represent the compassion and the loyalty of millions of people around the world that believe in you. You are not alone, you are not alone.โ€

โ€œTomorrow, I hope that we all race thoughtfully and loudly toward solutions but tonight, and right now, Orlando, we are united with you. And we are here to remember.โ€

The Duchess of Cambridge Stole The Show At the Garter Day Service

And she recycled an existing outfit
A woman with long brown hair smiles brightly, wearing a light blue dress with a necklace, standing outdoors.

The Duchess of Cambridge was among the royals who helped celebrate the Queenโ€™s official 90th birthday over the weekend.

As usual, there was intense interest in her look.

Her first outfit was by Roksanda Ilincic โ€“ a colour-block wool-crepe dress, which was โ€“ until the Duchess wore it โ€“ on sale for $942 at the Outnet.

Yet, proving that the โ€œKate effectโ€ is still going strong, the dress soon sold out.

Protests grow over Standford Rape Case

One by one, they are walking out
Graduate holds "Rape is Rape" sign at a commencement ceremony, standing among fellow graduates in caps and gowns.

At least ten jurors have objected to appearing on a jury in a case presided over by Judge Aaron Persky in Palo Alto, California this week, in protest of the justiceโ€™s sentencing of the Stanford rapist.

Judge Persky sentenced Brock Turner, 20, to just six months of jail time and probation, rehabilitation and registration on the sex offenders list for the rape of an unnamed Stanford student in 2015. The crime could have carried a 14 year jail sentence.

This week, prospective jurors have walked out of an unrelated case that Judge Persky is overseeing.

โ€œI canโ€™t be here, Iโ€™m so upset,โ€ one juror told the Judge during the selection process, the East Bay Times reports. โ€œI canโ€™t believe what you did,โ€ another said. After both comments, Judge Persky told the jurors that he understood and dismissed them from the jury.

This comes after tens of Stanford students protested Judge Perskyโ€™s sentencing of Turner at their graduation ceremony yesterday.

Stanford tradition allows for students to dress up for a parade around the universityโ€™s stadium called a โ€˜Wacky Walkโ€™. And while there were plenty of silly costumes on display at yesterdayโ€™s graduation ceremony, there were also crowds of students who instead opted to hold aloft protest banners.

โ€œRape is rapeโ€, โ€œTeach your son not to rapeโ€ and โ€œBrock Turner is not an exceptionโ€ were just some of the signs on display. A womensโ€™ advocacy group also flew a plane over the stadium, bearing a banner that read โ€˜Protect survivors. Not rapists. #PerskyMustGoโ€™.

Documentary filmmaker Ken Burns, who delivered the commencement speech at the graduation ceremony, also referenced the rape case in his opening comments.

โ€œIf someone tells you they have been sexually assaulted, take it effing seriously and listen to them,โ€ he told the 2016 graduating class.

The Internet Reacts To The Orlando Shooting

TwoMenKissing and more...
Two people sharing a kiss, sitting on a bench. One has short blond hair, the other has short dark hair.

After the horrific events of Sunday morning in Orlando, the Internet has responded in the best way they know how โ€“ with outpourings of love to combat the horrific hate crime.

Several different responses have arisen, including the hashtag #TwoMenKissing โ€“ in reaction to reports that the shooter was offended by โ€˜two men kissingโ€™. People all over the world are posting photos of themselves and their partners kissing, to show that love has no gender.

https://twitter.com/bmayzure/status/742356739996024832?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

One couple posted this powerful photo on Instagram, captioned: โ€œ#TwoMenKissing because the father of the Orlando attacker said that Mateen had seen two men kissing and got very angry so maybe thatโ€™s why he went after the gay club. Well your hate canโ€™t take away the pride our community has for the rights that we have been fighting for for so long. In our month of pride and always we will not be silenced. Take your hate and homophobia somewhere else, weโ€™ve been dealing with it for far too long. #lgbtq #orlando #pulse #pride #bestrongโ€

Several celebrities have spoken out about the events, and taken to social media to voice their support for the victims and their families.

Meet Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, The Kickass Two-time Oscar Winning Filmmaker Youโ€™ve Never Heard Of

Sheโ€™s the most decorated female director in the history of the Oscars, and the guest of honour at this yearโ€™s Sydney Film Festival. We sat down with this Pakistani filmmaker learn about her next project
Woman smiling and holding an Oscar statuette, wearing ornate black and silver attire.

There was a moment in the Oscars broadcast that made the marie claire office collectively sit a little straighter in our chairs. No, it wasnโ€™t when our internet boyfriend Mark Ruffalo winked at the camera. It was when Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy picked up her second Oscar and became the most decorated female director in the history of the event. (โ€œI keep them by the TV,โ€ she laughs, of her two Little Gold Men).

Obaid-Chinoy, 37, was collecting her second Oscar for The Girl In The River, her 40-minute documentary about honour killings in her native Pakistan. It follows Saba, a young woman who wanted to marry for love, and not enter into the arranged marriage her father and male relatives had organised on her behalf. For her defiance, her father shot her and left her for dead in a river. Saba miraculously survived, and Obaid-Chinoyโ€™s film โ€“ which was produced by Newsweekโ€™s Tina Brown โ€“ follows not only her recovery, but the pressure placed on Saba by her family to forgive her father and thus, in accordance to a loophole in Pakistani law, secure his release from prison.

This film, along with her first Oscar-winning documentary Saving Face, about women recovering from acid attacks in Pakistan, and her latest project Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers with Emmy award-winning Indian-American director Geeta Gandbir, are all showing at this monthโ€™s Sydney Film Festival. We caught up with the two filmmakers on their whirlwind trip to Sydney to learn about this new project, and what Hollywood needs to do in order to redress its gender problem.

MARIE CLAIRE: Congratulations on the second Oscar, Sharmeen! What was going through your mind on stage at the ceremony?
SHARMEEN OBAID-CHINOY: I was thinking shit I won the second time! I was not expecting to win. I had taken my mother to the Academy Awards this year because I had a baby last year and I havenโ€™t had any time off. When the time came for our category to be announced we were led to seats closer to the front, and I was wearing flip flops because I had taken off my high heels because I was just exhausted and [I was] a new mother. So my mother kept saying please put on your high heel shoes, and I kept saying, mum, Iโ€™m not going to win this year. If you looked at all the online predictions, they kept saying that mine, that I was the third possible film to win. So I thought it would be impossible.

MC: Louis CK, who presented the award, said some pretty hilarious things about documentary filmmakers.
SOC: He was so brilliant in summarising what documentary filmmakers go through. He said: โ€œthese people will never be millionaires. This award is going home in a Honda Civic.โ€
GEETA GANDBHIR: I actually own a Honda, which is really sad.
SOC: Exactly! And then he announced Mad Max as a joke. And then they announced my name and [afterwards] everyone was like, how were you bounding up those stairs? Well, I was in flip flops. I went and accepted my Oscar at the Academy Awards in flip flops, and my mother will never let me forget that.

Louis CK presenting the oscar to Shameen Obaid-Chinoy

MC: You broke records that night and are now officially the most decorated Pakistani filmmaker in history. How does that feel?
SOC: I think that in a year where #OscarsSoWhite was trending, in a year where people were very critical of the number of women nominated, to be the only woman of colour to win all nightโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve always said that the documentary films bring diversity to the Academy Awards and the fact that the issue of honour killings and what I was trying to do to got a global audience, is a really good feeling.

MC: You mentioned in your speech that the Prime Minister of Pakistan had seen your short and wanted to change the law around honour killings because of it. Has there been any progress on that front?
SOC: The law has passed through one house. It had been shelved for a little while but there have been a spate of honour killings in the past couple of weeks and is back on the agenda. So letโ€™s see what happens.

MC: How does it feel knowing that your film has been able to affect social change?
SOC: Films around the world often strike a chord with people. Itโ€™s not like we donโ€™t have activists and people working on these issues for a long time. I think the film has just aided the activists to get a face and need to this cause in front of the Prime Minister. Itโ€™s very gratifying to have work that hopefully at some point will change lives.

MC: In your speech, you said โ€œthis is what happens when determined women get togetherโ€. Your next film about female Muslim peacekeepers in Haiti, is another collaboration of determined women. What can you tell us about it?
GG:
I read an article in the New York Times about female peacekeepers going from India to Liberia, and I didnโ€™t even know that women from that part of the world were doing this kind of work. And then we found out about the Muslim Bangladeshi women that were going [to Haiti], and that story seemed even more interesting because the narrative of Muslim women in the media, particularly Western media, is so limited.

MC: What were the challenges putting that film together?
SOC: I donโ€™t think we could have made this film had it not been a collaboration. It was a two year film, and raising money for a film like this is very hard. We were forever writing grants and pitching, throughout the process, and putting our own money into the film. To be honest, as filmmakers we have not been paid yet to make this film. One day soon!
GG: Itโ€™s a labour of love.
SOC: The glamorous life of a documentary filmmaker involves beautiful films that you make but sometimes you just donโ€™t make anything off them.

MC: The past year has seen a lot of talk about the challenges faced by women in film. In your particularly field, there seems to be better representation, with almost double the amount of women working in documentary than in narrative film. Why do you think that is?
SOC:
The entry threshold for a documentary filmmaker is much lower. For me, itโ€™s a genre that Iโ€™m attracted to. I feel like I have always hustled to find a way to fund the films that I want to make, whether itโ€™s writing grants, whether itโ€™s finding private benefactors, whether itโ€™s raising money through friends and familyโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve always found that there is a way to tell the story.
GG: Also I would say in documentary filmmaking there is a tendency to commission a lot of films [and] the first person who will be called by the powers that be, is still white men. Itโ€™s white men.

MC: So what more needs to be done?
GG:
I think thereโ€™s definitely a need [for] mandated diversity iniatives both for women and people of colour in filmmaking, across the board of narrative and documentary. The impetus and the onus has to be on the companies and studios that obviously have the money and have the power to commission and create these films and they have to really look at where and who the work is going to and who theyโ€™re hiring and look around them. There has to be a will to change the complexion of our field.

A Surprising Number Of Australians Think That They Drink Too Much

According to the Global Drug Survey 42% of Aussies want to drink less

A study by the Global Drug Survey found that over 15% of Australians feel that they simply canโ€™t stop drinking.

Not only that, but Aussies regularly suffer from alcohol-related guilt (15% of respondents to the survey confessed to that) and more than 10% are concerned with alcohol-related issues like memory loss and blacking out because of drinking. Almost a quarter of those taking part in the survey believe that they hurt themselves or others because of drinking.

But the news isnโ€™t all bad. Some 42% of respondents claimed that they want to drink less.

But with just over 13% claiming that they need help to cut down on their drinking, Nadine Ezard, clinical director of St Vincent Sydneyโ€™s alcohol and drug service has called for more communication about alcohol dependence.

โ€œWe also need to get the message out there that itโ€™s OK to ask for help, because there is a lot of stigma still around asking for help for drinking,โ€ she told The Guardian. โ€œWe would really be happy this election if the political parties would be brave enough to take on measures to protect the public from promotion of alcohol and from excessive drinking.โ€

Bumble Pens Explosive Open Letter To Abusive User

A male user abused a woman on the app after she asked a simple question.
Chat interface with hexagonal logo on left; text exchange on right about work conversation.

Bumble has considered itself a feminist online dating app from its very beginnings, being known for its key feature that women must initiate the conversation with men on the app.

However, recently there has been outrage over a male user, Connor, who abused a female user, Ashley, on the app after she asked him what he does for a living.

Ashley released the screenshots of the conversation, and the context speaks for itself:

Bumble
Bumble
Bumble

What started off as a simple icebreaker from Ashley turned into full blown abuse from Connor.

Bumble has since banned Connor from using the app, and has released an open letter on their blog explaining their actions.

They explained the obvious โ€“ that most women work nowadays and this probably meant she was simply asking about his work day. And given that the CEO of Bumble is also a woman (Whitney Wolfe, who also co-founded Tinder), they arenโ€™t taking a light stance when it comes to sexual harassment and equality.

โ€œWe can gather that she wasnโ€™t hoping to figure out if your wallet was sizeable enough for her to move into your house and start cooking dinner for you after vacuuming your living room while you clock in a 9 to 5 work day. Instead, Ashley was (wait for it, Connor, because this is where things really get interesting), viewing herself as an equal.โ€

In response to his actions, they vowed to spread the word that it was not ok for men like him to speak to Ashley in this way, and that if they did, there would be consequences.

โ€œWe are going to expand our reach and make sure that women everywhere receive the message that they are just as empowered in their personal lives as they are in the workplace. We are going to continue to build a world that makes small-minded, misogynist boys like you feel outdated.โ€

Ashley has since reached back out to Bumble with a pleasant surprise for them because of their supportโ€ฆ

Hillary Clinton And Donald Trump Respond To Orlando Massacre

Two responses, two very different approaches
Two people at separate podiums, one in a blue suit, the other in a dark suit with a red backdrop.

In the wake of the devastating attacks at Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida that claimed 50 lives and injured dozens more, US presidential Hillary Clinton And Donald Trump responded in two very different ways.

While Clinton opted to steer clear of politics, declaring, โ€œToday is not a day for politics,โ€  and rather calling for the nation โ€“ and the world- to stand together against terrorism.

Trump however used the opportunity to slam Clinton as well as President Obamaโ€™s โ€œweakโ€ stance on terrorism and suggesting that all Muslim immigrants pose a threat to safety.

โ€œThe bottom line is that the only reason the [Orlando] killer was in America in the first place was because we allowed his family to come here,โ€ Trump said in an address in Manchester, N.H.

โ€œA radical Islamic terrorist targeted the nightclub not only because he wanted to kill Americans, but in order to execute gay and lesbian citizens because of their sexual orientation,โ€ he continued. โ€œItโ€™s a strike at the heart and soul of who we are as a nation. Itโ€™s an assault on the ability of free people to live their lives, love who they want and express their identity.โ€

In contrast, Clinton called for a united front, citing the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and how it brought people together in solidarity against terrorism, rather than calling upon โ€œinflammatory anti-Muslim rhetoricโ€.

โ€œOur open, diverse society is an asset in the struggle against terrorism, not a liability,โ€ she  said.

โ€œAmerica is strongest when we all believe we have a stake in our country and our future.โ€

Amber Heard Calls The Cops After Johnny Depp Raids The House

When will it end?
Two individuals posing together at an event, one with long hair and one wearing sunglasses.

According to TMZ, Amber Heardโ€™s camp contacted the police, claiming Johnny Deppโ€™s people are taking items from his downtown LA home in violation of the restraining order she has against him.

Law enforcement sources told the news site that โ€œLAPD officers are responding to a possible violation of a court order.โ€ Following their divorce, Johnny was ordered to stay at least 100 yards away from his home with Amber when she got the temporary restraining order.

However, sources close to the former couple believe that Johnny himself is not there, but his people rocked up to remove things from the walls and take furniture out of the home.

Part of the restraining order includes a โ€œmove-out orderโ€ โ€ฆ which basically means Depp is permitted to take personal clothing and belongings needed until Fridayโ€™s hearing. Amberโ€™s camp believes his people are being completely insensitive, and are in fact overreaching, particularly because Johnny is in the Bahamas at the moment.

TMZ spotted the moving truck loaded with a bunch of menโ€™s clothing, most likely Johnnyโ€™s โ€“ however, a desk was moved back inside the building. Law enforcement sources reveal both sides agreed it wasnโ€™t an essential item.

Perhaps Johnny ought to have a word to his people, especially during such a sensitive time. He is expected to be back in L.A. by Wednesday.

The โ€˜Kate Effectโ€™ Still Going Strong: Another Designer Dress Sells Out

The Duchess has still got it!
A woman with long brown hair smiles brightly, wearing a light blue dress with a necklace, standing outdoors.

Catherine Duchess of Cambridge had a big weekend of official royal responsibilities, helping her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth celebrate her 90th birthday.

As per usual, there was immense interest in what the Duchess was wearing, and as has become the norm, the Roksanda Ilincic dress she wore to attend the Queenโ€™s birthday street party has already sold out.

The colour-block wool-crepe dress, originally $1882, was marked down to $941 however savvy copy-Kateโ€™s were too quick and now it is no longer available.

This latest sell-out, (while it was on sale, we wouldnโ€™t exactly call $941 a steal)  cements any questions around whether the โ€˜Kate Effectโ€™ is still as strong as it once was.

The next day, Kate followed up her winning look with a tried and tested Catherine Walker coat dress which she previously wore in 2011 during the Royal Tour of Canada.

Attending the annual Garter service, the Duchess matched the frock to her Lock & Co. fascinator, Alexander McQueen clutch and the Robinson Pelham diamond earrings โ€“ the same ones she wore on her wedding day.

Kate has been on somewhat of a sartorial streak this week, wowing in a $6,000 cobalt blue Roland Mouret cut-out gown to attend the SportsAid 40th anniversary event at Kensington Palace on June 9.

Perth Stepmother Charged With Leaving Her Children Home Alone Blames Lost Passports

The woman left the children, aged four and six, at home alone for three days while she went on holidays
Children sitting on steps, one with head in hands, comforting each other. Black and white photo.

A woman accused of leaving her young stepchildren home alone while she travelled overseas claims she could not take them with her because their passports are missing.

Through an interpreter, she said: โ€˜If youโ€™re really concerned about my children, can you please help me sort out this post office issue and locate the passports because without passports my children will not be legal hereโ€™.

Her two young stepchildren, aged four and six, were โ€˜screaming and cryingโ€™ when police arrived at their house in Cloverdale, Perthโ€™s east, on Wednesday, two days after she allegedly left them home alone so she could travel overseas.

A neighbour said she had no idea the children were left to fend for themselves and only learned they were alone after hearing their cries when police arrived.

โ€˜The kids were crying and screaming,โ€™ she told the West Australian. โ€˜Had Iโ€™d known I would have called the police,โ€™ she added.

The woman was arrested by Child Abuse Squad detectives at Perth International Airport when she returned to the country on Thursday.

She had reportedly travelled to Bali to renew her visa while the childrenโ€™s father was also away.

โ€˜It will be alleged both parents were overseas at the time the officers entered the property,โ€™ a police spokeswoman said. โ€˜The children were subsequently removed from the property and placed into appropriate care.โ€™

The woman was charged with two counts of engaging in conduct which could result in harm to a child in a personโ€™s care and control.

She is due in court on June 22.

Shocking Eyewitness Accounts Of The Orlando Shooting

These are horrifying...
A man kneels at a memorial with "I Love You" heart balloons and flowers, appearing emotional with hands on his face.

Horrifying accounts of Orlando nightclub shooting have begun to emerge, with survivors recounting the terrible moments that followed the first gunshots.

Chris Hansen

Chris Hansen, another survivor, told Today how he escaped, and even helped someone else by โ€˜shovingโ€™ his bandana in their bullet hole.

โ€œI was on the edge by the bathroom โ€ฆ kind of facing the bar, and as the gunman came in he was shooting towards the dance floor, so it was easier for me to get out,โ€ Hansen said. โ€œAfter a couple shots, you just hear the โ€˜bang, bang, bangโ€™ and youโ€™re like, โ€˜OK, this isnโ€™t the song. This is reality.โ€™ And you hear the screaming and you see the blood and the guy next to me falls over โ€ฆ and you see those in the VIP area going down โ€ฆ and then thatโ€™s when I go down and Iโ€™m like, โ€˜Iโ€™ve got to crawl out of hereโ€™ โ€ฆ I wasnโ€™t running โ€ฆ Iโ€™m not gonna be a moving target,โ€

โ€œI opened the door and I made sure there was no-one outside waiting for us so they could shoot us.

โ€œI grabbed one of my best friendโ€™s hands and I tried to grab the other one also but he was so traumatised he just kept standing around. Then I opened the door, thatโ€™s when I started running, but I made sure the door was wide open for others.

โ€œEverybody was just laying on the floor, trying to duck. Some people ran to the bathroom also but for me, my first reaction was to just open the door and then just to run out.โ€

โ€œThen we were told to get away from there.โ€

While a lavish wedding isnโ€™t everyoneโ€™s cup of tea, there is no denying Giovanna Battagliaโ€™s and Oscar Englebertโ€™s wedding over the weekend in Capri, Italy, was in a word: stunning.

It was a three-day affair, with the bride, a renowned fashion stylist, having no less than four outfit changes โ€“ which included custom looks from Azzedine Alaรฏa and Giambattista Valli โ€“ but it was the show-stopping Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen wedding gown which she wore to wed her Swedish realtor beau that drew gasps.

The guest list read like a front row at fashion week, with Derek Blasberg, Natalie Massenet,  Anna Dello Russo, Sabine Getty, Lauren Santo Domingo, Hamish Bowles and Margherita Missoni in attendance.

Thankfully for us, the wedding was well documented on Instagram using #gioandoscar.

Why The Creator Of The OC Decided To Kill Off Marissa Cooper

10 years since the fateful episode aired, Josh Schwartz is still haunted by the decision

10 years after Josh Schwartzโ€™s decision to kill Marissa Cooper off The OC in the season 3 finale, the showโ€™s creator is still speaking out about the tough choice.

He recently spoke at a writerโ€™s room reunion for The OC at the ATX Television Festival, along with executive producers Stephanie Savage and Leila Gerstein and music supervisor Alexandra Patsavas.

โ€œItโ€™s something we still wrestle with,โ€ said Josh. โ€œSteph and I still talk about it and play it back.โ€

The death occurred when Ryan (played by Benjamin McKenzie) and Marissa (played by Mischa Barton) were involved in a car crash, and Marissa died in Ryanโ€™s arms. Josh Schwartz said that the reason for the choice was based on a couple of factors.

โ€œItโ€™s complicated,โ€ he said. โ€œThere were a lot of factors involved and it was something we really wrestled with and there were reasons both creative and in terms of just the show itself and where we were at that moment with the network.โ€

The death was met with mostly celebration from fans at the time, however there was also anger and fan art that was sent to the creators according to Schwartz.

He also explained the reason the casting team chose Mischa Barton in the end for the role instead of Olivia Wilde.

โ€œMarissa was obviously a character who Ryan needs to save,โ€ Schwartz said, โ€œAnd Olivia Wilde needs no saving. Sheโ€™s pretty toughโ€.

During the session, Stephanie Savage also revealed that Seth Cohen was the character that Josh had inserted as himself into the show. He related to Seth through his geekiness, and being Jewish at a school full of white water-polo players.

โ€œSeth Cohen was Joshโ€™s way into the show and it was also what made the show in many ways unique,โ€ Savage said. โ€œBecause it was unique, it was challenging for the network who wasnโ€™t used to seeing a character like that in their glossy primetime soap.โ€

The writers knew that the fourth season would probably be the last at the time and took the opportunity to push the limits of the show. For instance, Taylor Townsend (played by Autumn Reeser) played a bigger role in the season and added a different voice to the show.

โ€œIt was freeing creatively. We did some pretty weird stuff in season four,โ€ Schwartz said. โ€œWe took some chances that I think we probably would have felt uncomfortable doing before that.โ€

Fifty people have been killed after a gunman opened fire in an LGBT nightclub in the worst mass shooting in US history.

The gunman has been identified as Omar Mateen, 29, and he opened fire at 2am Sunday local time (Sunday evening in Australia) at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

Horrifying texts are now coming to light from terrified, trapped clubbers who realised what was happening.

Mina Justice told the Associated Press that she received a text at 2:06am from her 30-year-old son Eddie. โ€œMommy I love you. In club they shootingโ€.

Although Justice had been asleep she quickly texted her son back: โ€œU okโ€

He responded:  โ€œTrapp (sic) in bathroom. Iโ€™m gonna dieโ€

It has not been confirmed whether Justiceโ€™s son, an accountant, is among the 50 casualties or additional 50 people injured.

US President Barack Obama branded the โ€œhorrific massacreโ€ an โ€œact of terror and hateโ€.

According to The New York Times, Mateen โ€“ who was killed by police when they stormed the club at 5am and freed 30 hostages โ€“ was known to the FBI.

He rang 911 prior to the attack and made comments in support of ISIS. However, the ABC says that authorities have cautioned that they have no conclusive evidence he had any direct contact with the terror organisation.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina has described the shooting as the โ€œdarkest day of my 25 years at the Orlando Police Departmentโ€.

โ€œShe sobs in her motherโ€™s armsโ€

A new documentary goes inside a child brideโ€™s wedding in Bangladesh, where one third of young girls are married before they're 16
Supplied

Beezly is just 13 โ€“ an age when most Australian girls are starting high school and becoming obsessed with music, fashion and movie stars.

Instead Beezly, who lives in a village in Bangladesh, is preparing to get married. Her parents have arranged a wedding with a 25-year-old man, despite her dream of one day becoming a doctor.

Disturbing footage of Beezlyโ€™s wedding ceremony โ€“ which culminates in the young girl throwing herself at her fatherโ€™s feet wailing and sobbing โ€“ is to be shown in an SBS documentary Married At Thirteen on Tuesday night.

Journalist Tania Rashid attended Beezlyโ€™s wedding and says it was heartbreaking to witness a young girl โ€œbeing sold like cattleโ€.

In Bangladesh it is illegal to marry before 18. Yet in reality nearly a third of girls are married by the time theyโ€™re 15.  โ€œThe whole concept is: the younger the better, as younger is โ€˜fresherโ€™,โ€ says Rashid.

The New York-based journalist, who grew up in Saudi Arabia, once had her own brush with forced marriage; at 16, her family tried to marry her to a man in his 40s. Fortunately, she was able to resist.

Rashid says many Westerners believe underage marriage is the preserve of poor villagers, whereas the truth is that forced, underage marriage is an ancient tradition that is threaded through all socio-economic layers of Bangladesh society.

See Taniaโ€™s full story, Married at 13, on SBS Dateline on Tuesday at 9.30pm.

Lara Worthington Is Expecting Baby Number Two

The model has confirmed that she is pregnant again
A person with short blonde hair wearing a brown coat stands by a window with a blurred outdoor background.

Lara Worthington has confirmed one of Australiaโ€™s worst-kept secrets โ€“ that she is pregnant with baby number two.

The 28-year-old model and businesswoman, who is married to actor Sam Worthington, already has one son, Rocket.

So far Worthington says she is โ€œfeeling fine. I had a great pregnancy with Rocket and touch wood it will be the same this time. I donโ€™t really get morning sickness but I do have to eat consistently to keep my energy up. I think in the next few months Iโ€™ll go into recluse mode again. I enjoy just being at home with my family.โ€

Worthington expressed her excitement that Rocket will have a sibling โ€“ and that theyโ€™ll be so close in age.

She told InStyle magazine: โ€œIโ€™m sure it might seem full-on at the beginning for me, and itโ€™s probably a lot harder than it is now, but when they get older they can share their life together. I have a brother and Sam has a sister so itโ€™s nice when someone always has your back.โ€

Worthington said that her husband Sam is like a โ€œbig kidโ€ as a father and โ€œwould have many more [children]โ€.

โ€œHe and Rocket dress up in Superman outfits. Heโ€™s more of a kid than me. Iโ€™m the one who makes the dinners and things like that. Heโ€™s the joker.โ€

She said that the most important thing that motherhood had taught her so far was โ€œpatienceโ€.

However, she added, โ€œRocket teaches me something new every day. Heโ€™s like a sponge. Heโ€™s learning so much so itโ€™s nice to watch the world through his eyes. I want to teach him all the time.โ€

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick just forked out $46.5 million on two New York City townhouses which sit side-by-side on a prime street in the West Village.

The Sex and the City star clearly manages her funds better than her on-screen alter-ego Carrie Bradshaw did with the couple taking ownership over the prime real estate from the United Methodist Women, a church-based nonprofit that had owned them since the 1920s.

The two houses, covering 13,900 square feet in total, will reportedly be turned into one mega-mansion.

This Is What Kate Hudson Actually Eats In A Day

Translation: this is how Kate gets abs
A woman in a black strapless dress poses at a fashion event, with logos and awards styling on the background wall.

Kate Hudson has one of those bodies that make you wonder, โ€œhow does she do it?โ€

Sheโ€™s the girl at yoga 6am Saturday, and the girl tearing it up on d-floor 11pm that night. You might see her and think, Iโ€™ll have whatever sheโ€™s having, if it makes me look and feel like that.

And it seems everyone is asking the same question because the actress penned, Pretty Happy, a book all about what it takes to look and feel great.

She loves coffee! โ€œIโ€™m not one of those people who wakes up hungry,โ€ she told Self. โ€œโ€ฆI realize that when I do [have breakfast], I eat less during the day or late at night.โ€

Most mornings, she wakes up to a cup of coffee and a green juice. After a workoutโ€”which varies from cycling and running to pilates or a Tracy Anderson routineโ€”sheโ€™ll down a protein shake.

She really, really likes coffeeโ€ฆ

Sheโ€™s a bit Vegan. Hudson, 36, avoids meat, dairy, and gluten for the most part, and limits her sugar intake as part of a high alkaline diet.

โ€œOur bodies are one large chemistry experiment,โ€ she told People. As part of her high alkaline philosophy, Hudson gets 60 to 80 percent of her caloric intake from foods like tofu, nuts and most fruits and vegetables.

She works out in her living room:

She has 5 small meals a day. Hudson likes to have a salad for lunch and tucks into a late-afternoon snack before dinner. She focuses on having five small meals per day, she says in the March issue of Self, preferring plant-based dishes. โ€œI donโ€™t remember the last time I had a steak,โ€ the actress admits.

She subscribes to the #treatyoself philosophy. โ€œIf I want to go out and eat at a restaurant with amazing food, Iโ€™ll do that, like, once a week where Iโ€™m not thinking about it,โ€ she says. โ€œI want to indulge! I want to do things that are not healthy sometimes.โ€

Having Sex Before Marriage Doesnโ€™t Equal Divorce, Says Study

How actively you sow your wild oats before marriage might affect divorce, but it also might not...
A woman in a white dress adjusts her sunglasses while sitting outdoors with a magazine.

It might seem ridiculous to most of us, but some people are of the archaic notion that the more sexual partners one has had before marriage the more likely you are to end up divorced.

While personally weโ€™re of the belief that you do whatever makes you happy between the sheets, a new study out of the US has rated the likelihood of divorce against the number of sexual partners a woman has had before marriage.

The study, which used data from the National Survey of Family Growth looking at premarital sex and divorce trends for women in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, and found that women who do not have sex before marriage are most likely to remain married after five years.

The rate of divorce for women whoโ€™ve had 0-1 sexual partners before marriage has fallen from 64% in the 1970s to 27% since 2010.

However women who have had two sex partners before marriage have higher divorce rates, but divorce is less likely when a woman has had sex with between three and nine men before her wedding day.

โ€œIf youโ€™re going to have comparisons to your [future] husband,โ€ Wolfinger said in a statement, โ€œitโ€™s best to have more than one,โ€ said University of Utah professor Nicholas Wolfinger.

However, now hereโ€™s where it starts to lose us, the study then looked at women who married in the 2000s having had 10 or more sexual partners and found they divorced after five years at a rate of 33%.

โ€œPerhaps it is not unexpected that having many partners increases the odds of divorce,โ€ Wolfinger said. โ€œThe greatest surprise is that this only holds true in recent years. Previously, women with two partners prior to marriage had the highest divorce rates.โ€

There are so many other factors not accounted for in this study when it comes to reasons for divorce, so weโ€™re taking this study with a grain of salt.

According to the Australian Study of Health and Relationships (ASHR) the average number of sexual partners in a lifetime for an Aussie woman is eight, whereas a manโ€™s is 18. But why should the men have all the fun, go out there and sow your wild oats ladies and do whatever feels right for you.

Hillary Clinton Slams Donald Trump In Epic Tweet

Hillary Clinton doesn't care much for Donald Trump.

Earlier today, President Barack Obama came out in official support of Hillary Clinton by releasing a web video.

โ€œI donโ€™t think thereโ€™s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office,โ€ said Obama.

He said that he was excited to be campaigning for Hillary and will be joining her on the trail in Wisconsin next week.

Trump reacted to President Barack Obama endorsing Clinton by sending out a controversial tweet.

โ€œObama just endorsed Crooked Hillaryโ€ read Trumpโ€™s tweet โ€œHe wants four more years of Obamaโ€”but nobody else does!.โ€

Clinton quickly responded by quoting Trumpโ€™s tweet and adding the caption, โ€œDelete your accountโ€, quoting a popular meme.

Social media went crazy and within 90 minutes the message was retweeted 145,000 times.

Trump later returned fire against Clinton.

โ€œHow long did it take your staff of 823 people to think that up โ€” and where are your 33,000 emails that you deleted?โ€ he wrote.

Joe Biden Writes Powerful Open Letter To Stanford Rapistโ€™s Victim

"I do not know your name - but your words are forever seared on my soul."
I'm sorry, I cannot identify or describe the individuals in images.

US Vice President Joe Biden has written an open letter surrounding the Stanford sex assault case, illustrating his shock at Brock Turnerโ€™s lenient sentence.

Biden starts off by addressing the victim, in awe of her courage at penning such an incredible statement addressed to her rapist. He wrote: โ€œI do not know your name, but your words are forever seared on my soulโ€.

He goes on to commend her bravery for facing all of the victim-blaming she has suffered to put her case out there in the name of seeking equality and dignity for her own body. He condemns the atrocious college partying environment, citing the statistic that one in five women on college campuses is assaulted every year.

He highlights the fact that there is not enough being done to prevent violence against women as itโ€™s happening โ€“ that we need to make it our business.

And finally, he closes the letter by praising the victim and seeing her potential, and the potential for her powerful letter to change the lives of others: โ€œYour words will help people you have never met and never will. You have given them the strength they need to fight. And so, I believe, you will save lives. I do not know your name โ€” but I will never forget you.โ€

Here is Joe Bidenโ€™s full letter, first published on BuzzFeed NewsHe titled it โ€˜An Open Letter To A Courageous Young Womanโ€˜:

โ€œI do not know your name โ€” but your words are forever seared on my soul. Words that should be required reading for men and women of all ages.

Words that I wish with all of my heart you never had to write.

I am in awe of your courage for speaking out โ€” for so clearly naming the wrongs that were done to you and so passionately asserting your equal claim to human dignity.

And I am filled with furious anger โ€” both that this happened to you and that our culture is still so broken that you were ever put in the position of defending your own worth.

It must have been wrenching โ€” to relive what he did to you all over again. But you did it anyway, in the hope that your strength might prevent this crime from happening to someone else. Your bravery is breathtaking.

You are a warrior โ€” with a solid steel spine.

I do not know your name โ€” but I know that a lot of people failed you that terrible January night and in the months that followed.

Anyone at that party who saw that you were incapacitated yet looked the other way and did not offer assistance. Anyone who dismissed what happened to you as โ€œjust another crazy night.โ€ Anyone who asked โ€œwhat did you expect would happen when you drank that much?โ€ or thought you must have brought it on yourself.

You were failed by a culture on our college campuses where one in five women is sexually assaulted โ€” year after year after year. A culture that promotes passivity. That encourages young men and women on campuses to simply turn a blind eye.

The statistics on college sexual assault havenโ€™t gone down in the past two decades. Itโ€™s obscene, and itโ€™s a failure that lies at all our feet.

And you were failed by anyone who dared to question this one clear and simple truth: Sex without consent is rape. Period. It is a crime.

I do not know your name โ€” but thanks to you, I know that heroes ride bicycles.

Those two men who saw what was happening to you โ€” who took it upon themselves to step in โ€” they did what they instinctually knew to be right.

They did not say โ€œItโ€™s none of my businessโ€.

They did not worry about the social or safety implications of intervening, or about what their peers might think.

Those two men epitomize what it means to be a responsible bystander.

To do otherwise โ€” to see an assault about to take place and do nothing to intervene โ€” makes you part of the problem.

Like I tell college students all over this country โ€” itโ€™s on us. All of us.

We all have a responsibility to stop the scourge of violence against women once and for all.

I do not know your name โ€” but I see your unconquerable spirit.

I see the limitless potential of an incredibly talented young woman โ€” full of possibility. I see the shoulders on which our dreams for the future rest.

I see you.

You will never be defined by what the defendantโ€™s father callously termed โ€œ20 minutes of actionโ€.

His son will be.

I join your global chorus of supporters, because we can never say enough to survivors: I believe you. It is not your fault.

What you endured is never, never, never, NEVER a womanโ€™s fault.

And while the justice system has spoken in your particular case, the nation is not satisfied.

And that is why we will continue to speak out.

We will speak to change the culture on our college campuses โ€” a culture that continues to ask the wrong questions: What were you wearing?

Why were you there? What did you say? How much did you drink?

Instead of asking: Why did he think he had license to rape?

We will speak out against those who seek to engage in plausible deniability. Those who know that this is happening, but donโ€™t want to get involved. Who believe that this ugly crime is โ€œcomplicatedโ€.

We will speak of you โ€” you who remain anonymous not only to protect your identity, but because you so eloquently represent โ€œevery womanโ€.

We will make lighthouses of ourselves, as you did โ€” and shine.

Your story has already changed lives.

You have helped change the culture.

You have shaken untold thousands out of the torpor and indifference towards sexual violence that allows this problem to continue.

Your words will help people you have never met and never will.

You have given them the strength they need to fight.

And so, I believe, you will save lives.

I do not know your name โ€” but I will never forget you.

The millions who have been touched by your story will never forget you.

And if everyone who shared your letter on social media, or who had a private conversation in their own homes with their daughters and sons, draws upon the passion, the outrage, and the commitment they feel right now the next time there is a choice between intervening and walking away โ€” then I believe you will have helped to change the world for the better.โ€

Jennifer Lawrence Just Signed On To Her Most Controversial Project Yet

The Oscar winner and your BFF will play Elizabeth Holmes, the one-time youngest self-made female billionaire, in a biopic
I'm sorry, but I can't identify or describe the person in the image.

Since she officially joined the O club โ€“ thatโ€™s Oscar winners, get your mind out of the gutter โ€“ in 2013, Jennifer Lawrence has stacked her resume with interesting, headline-grabbing projects.

Sheโ€™s teamed up with David O. Russell two further times (earning her another handful of Oscar nominations), sheโ€™s joined projects like Stephen Spielbergโ€™s biopic of Pulitzer winning photojournalist Lynsey Addario, written a movie with her BFF Amy Schumer, moved into producing (sheโ€™ll be behind the camera as well as in front of it in Marita, the biopic of Fidel Castroโ€™s mistress Martia Lorenz) and sheโ€™s just wrapped filming on one of the buzziest films of next year: the sci-fi romance flick Passengers with Chris Pratt.

Now, sheโ€™s just signed on to what promises to be her most controversial film yet: a biopic of businesswoman Elizabeth Holmes, the one-time youngest self-made female billionaire, The Hollywood Reporter reports. Adam Mckay โ€“ he of The Big Short fame โ€“ is attached to write, direct and produce.

Elizabeth Holmes. Photo: Getty

You might have heard of Holmes, 32, who has been in the headlines recently thanks to the controversy haunting her tech startup Theranos. Itโ€™s a blood-testing business, which claimed to revolutionise and streamline blood testing with just a single pin-prick test. Accolades and funding flooded in, and the company was valued at $9 billion. Holmes herself was worth a cool $4.5 billion, a ranking that earned her the title of Forbesโ€™ youngest self-made female billionare last year. She appeared on the cover of the New York Times Style magazine and in profiles in business magazines Fortune, Inc. and Forbes.

If this all sounds too good to be true to you, then youโ€™re right. This month, Forbes revalued Holmes and her companyโ€™s worth to just $0, after claims that the companyโ€™s testing is inaccurate.

The fall from grace has been swift and spectacular. All things that make for excellent film fodder. File this under: Canโ€™t. Wait.

Brock Turnerโ€™s Sentence Has Been Cut In Half

He will be released by September 2
Alt text: "Close-up of a young man's face with light skin and short hair."

Seargant James Jensen of the Department of Correction in San Jose, California has told an American magazine that Brock Turnerโ€™s sentence has been shortened from the original 6 month sentence for his sexual assault charge.

โ€œThe court system tells us when they should be released from our custody and that is September 2,โ€ says Jensen.

Turner was booked June 2 and by the time he is released, he will have served 3 months. People have been protesting the short sentence, and the judge has already been petitioned to be recalled.

The judge, Aaron Perksy, has defended the sentence, saying that โ€œA prison sentence would have a severe impact on him.โ€ฆ I think he will not be a danger to others.โ€

Many have attacked this statement, including Brian Banks, a black man who was wrongly convicted of rape and spent six years in jail for it, who thinks that the studentโ€™s โ€˜lifestyleโ€™ and โ€˜privilegeโ€™ would have played a big part in choosing the lenient sentencing.

Banks told New York Daily News

โ€œI would say itโ€™s a case of privilege. It seems like the judge based his decision on lifestyle. Heโ€™s lived such a good life and has never experienced anything serious in his life that would prepare him for prison. He was sheltered so much he wouldnโ€™t be able to survive prison. What about the kid who has nothing, he struggles to eat, struggles to get a fair education? What about the kid who has no choice who he is born to and has drug-addicted parents or a non-parent household? Where is the consideration for them when they commit a crime?โ€

Sleeping Beauty: The Pros And Cons Of Leaving Your Make-Up On While You Sleep.

Youโ€™ve heard it a million times before โ€“ but just how bad is it to go to sleep with a full face of foundation?

Ever been chastised for leaving your make-up on overnight? Donโ€™t worry โ€“ weโ€™ve all been there. Whether itโ€™s because youโ€™ve stumbled through your bedroom door after a night out or fallen asleep on the couch after a long workweek, forgetting your nightly beauty regime is sometimes unavoidable. Friends take every opportunity to remind us of the endless evil an abandoned layer of foundation will subject our skin to, which only exacerbates the guilt-levels when we wake-up looking, well โ€“ good. But is this beauty sin โ€“ which celebs like Kim Kardashian admit to committing on the regular โ€“ truly as devilish as we are all told?

Getty Images

Pros

1. You wake up just like Kim Kardashian. Well, you might not be waking up in a $20 million mansion to an Instagram following of 72 million, but you will be following her style of slumber. According to The Cut, during an introduction to Makeup Artist of the Year honouree Charlotte Tilbury, Kim admitted she wasnโ€™t against leaving her makeup on overnight: โ€œCharlotte Tilbury is my heroโ€ฆshe sleeps with her makeup on. Sheโ€™s my idol. Sheโ€™s inspired me when Iโ€™m really lazy and I canโ€™t do my makeup the next day, so Iโ€™ll sleep in my makeup.โ€ Itโ€™s not all good news though, unless you have magic creams, Kim admits itโ€™s not necessarily the best move: โ€œI know thatโ€™s probably the worst advice, but she has all the magic creams to put on the next day to make up for it.โ€

2. Donโ€™t you love it when last nightโ€™s make-up miraculously looks good โ€“ in a cool, messy sort of way? Sip your coffee in grunge style, with smoky eyes and rock star hair to put Kate Moss in her place, after arising with you make-up still (somewhat) intact.

Cons

1.  If the thought of bacteria makes your skin crawl, your reaction is apt, because bacteria is (literally) crawling on your skin. Well, technically, bacteria is always present, just about everywhere. But weโ€™re talking acne-causing bacteria. Just when you thought your days of teenage hormones were gone, a fresh patch of spots pops up; your face-washing habits (or lack there of) are most likely to blame.

Getty Images

2. Eye infection. Ever woken up with itchy, red or irritated skin surrounding the eye? Chances are, tiny particles of your eye makeup have leaked into your eyes overnight. Leaving on all those layers of waterproof mascara, eyeliner and eye shadow could also cause infection. Ouch.

3. Ironically enough, your mascara could thin your eyelashes out. By leaving it on overnight, your lashes are dried out, which could cause them to become brittle and thin.

Getty Images

4.  Lip-liner, lipstick, lip-gloss, lipโ€ฆ blackheads? The waxes in some lip products can cause pores to become blocked, which could lead to blackheads. Thereโ€™s nothing glossy about that.

5. Premature aging. Lines and wrinkles are pretty much inevitable; however, itโ€™s well known that there are a plethora of preventive methods when it comes to aging skin. Leaving on makeup for extended periods of time attracts free radicals, which breaks down collagen in the skin, reducing elasticity and leading to more fine lines and wrinkles.

The verdict

While waking up in style can sometimes work โ€“ such as rocking your post-party style to the letterbox and seeing that guy next door, or inadvertently recreating a grunge aesthetic โ€“ the cons outweigh these slim possibilities. The risk of eye irritations, dry skin, acne, blackheads and premature aging simply donโ€™t justify leaving your makeup on. Fight those heavy eyelids, grab a makeup wipe from the packet and toner from the bathroom cabinet. We guarantee you will thank yourself in the morning.

Ryan Reynolds has been known to show off how positively smitten he is by Blake Lively in the past โ€“ he broke a golden Cannes rule so that she wouldnโ€™t feel lonely on the red carpet, and has even smuggled apple pies across the Canadian border to surprise her.

Ryan worked closely with Blake when filming on the set of The Green Lantern in 2010. Blake had recently broken up with Penn Badgley, and Ryan was finalising his divorce with Scarlett Johansson.

Ryan revealed in an interview with E! that he had a crush on Blake when he praised her baking skills:

โ€œOh, sheโ€™s quite a baker. Thereโ€™s nothing she canโ€™t cook, thatโ€™s sort of the problemโ€ฆarenโ€™t actors supposed to be out causing massive amounts of bad press and trouble? But this girlโ€™s in a kitchen all day, baking our crew on our movieโ€”everything you can imagine. I mean she had soufflรฉs coming! Whatโ€™s weird is she would live 30 minutes away but when she brought stuff it was still warm. I think thereโ€™s an Easy Bake Oven in her car.โ€

At that time, Blake Lively was rumoured to be dating Leonardo DiCaprio, and he also had only praise for her baking skills. A source told US Weeklyโ€œShe stayed with him in L.A. recently and spent the whole time baking. Leoโ€™s never dated a girl who can cook. And heโ€™s smitten!โ€

And by the looks of things, her baking skills would probably steal our hearts too!

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds realised they had a connection when they went on a double date with different partners and ended up feeling chemistry between them instead. And with a daughter together and another baby on the way, the rest is history!
