Prepare Your Passports: Here’s Everything To Know About The 2023 Cruise Collections

We’re resort-wear ready.

While the most recent Fall/Winter 2022 season piqued our interest for aesthetic runway presentations, we’re sure that the upcoming Cruise 2023 collection presentations will satisfy all our fashion cravings. Well at least until Spring/Summer 2023 that is.

Despite many designers using the down time between the Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer fashion weeks to finess their upcoming collections, many of our favourite luxury labels are catering to the jet-setting inclined and are preparing to present their latest resort wear range.

Taking place over May and June, legacy maisons including Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton are praying on our desire for travel and travelling to all corners of the globe to stage their 2023 Cruise Collections.

Two years of lockdowns later, it seems these designers have once again caught the travel bug and are reinstating physical runway shows.

From the Spanish peninsular to the crystal-clear harbour of Monaco, the upcoming presentations will satisfy our yearning for a European summer and we couldn’t be more ready for it.

Prepare your passports and keep scrolling below for everything to know about the upcoming 2023 Cruise collections.

What Is A Cruise Collection?

While the Australian climate lends itself to resortwear codes being incorporated in every collection, many of the luxury maisons tend to stick to the specific seasonality that they’re presenting.

So with many of the label’s clientele spending their summers in the most desirable sunkissed locations, the interseason cruise collection provides a solution for those who need a high-fashion warm-weather wardrobe.

With cruise collections focusing on resortwear, many maisons have also adopted the trend of hosting their presentations in luxurious and lavish locations and balmy destinations.

Silhouettes are typically more relaxed, made from lightweight materials and have a refined focus on the balmy and sun drenched days spent on holidays.

So far, Chanel, Dior and Louis Vuitton have all announced their upcoming 2023 Cruise presentations.

Chanel’s 2023 Cruise Collection Is Channeling The Past And Escaping To Monaco

In true Chanel spirit, the label will be staying true to the maison’s codes and upheld traditions by staging their upcoming Cruise collection in Monaco on May 5. Chanel has presented Cruise collections since 1910, with Monaco a constant source of inspiration for the luxury French label.

Legendary Chanel designers Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld both had a penchant for the coastal destination which still translates to this day. This is best seen in the relationship with Monégasque royal Charlotte Casiraghi, who you would have seen open Chanel’s 2022 Fall/Winter Haute Couture collection on horseback.

Dior’s 2023 Cruise Collection Is Saying Hola To Spain

Dior also took inspiration from their surroundings in choosing the location of the Cruise collections.

Taking place on June 16, Dior will take to the Plaza de España in Seville, Spain to showcase Maria Grazia Chiuri’s latest designs.

“Dior and Spain, and more specifically Andalusia, were forged as early as the 1950s, and have been strengthened ever since,” the label said in a statement. According to the brand, the collection will “showcase the excellence of Andalusian craftsmanship and culture through the creativity of local artists and artisans.”

This isn’t the only place Dior is travelling to this year, with the maison set to stage their upcoming pre-fall 2022 collection on April 30 in Seoul, South Korea and Spring 2023 men’s pre-collection in Los Angeles on May 19.

Louis Vuitton Is California Dreamin’ For Their Cruise 2023 Collection

Louis Vuitton is breaking from the mold and choosing the west coast of California as the location for their show. The Salk Institute of San Diago will play host to Nicolas Ghesquière and his legion of Louis Vuitton lovers.

“Having spent a lot of time in California, I was drawn to the idea of showing there again. The Salk Institute has been a place of wonder for me over the years and Louis Kahn’s stunning Brutalist architecture against this extraordinary setting of the Pacific Ocean and the California sunset provides me with endless inspiration. It also celebrates intelligence, knowledge and the belief in the power of science,” said the creative director in a statement.

Max Mara Is Taking Us To A Serene Garden For Cruise 2023

Italian label Max Mara never fails to remind us of the art of travel. Their last resort collection took us to the pristine island of Isicha, just a stone’s throw from the Amalfi Coast to present a resort wear collection worthy of our desires.

This year, Ian Griffiths will take to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon on June 28. Our passports are already packed.

Balenciaga Is Bidding Au Revoir To France For Spring 2023

Following suit is Balenciaga, who will host their first ever show outside Paris in New York on May 21. Despite the maison presenting their Spring 2023 collection, this show will be a pivotal moment for the label. Given Denma’s penchant for theatrics and extravagant displays, we’re sure that the brand has something big planned.

Gucci To Stage Their Upcoming Fashion Show In A Medieval Castle

Gucci, on the other hand, are taking cues from emerging labels like Jacquemus and forgoing the seasonality all together. Creative Director Alessandro Michelle decided in 2020 to relinquish “the worn-out ritual of seasonalities”. Despite this, the brand will be hosting a coed show at the Castel Del Monte on May 16.

Closer to home, Australian designers will be presenting their upcoming resort collections at the largest trade event in the Asia-Pacific—Afterpay Australian Fashion Week 2022.
