Tonight, the 2026 Oscars took over the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, bringing an unusually unpredictable awards season to its glittering conclusion.
Hosted for the second consecutive year by comedian Conan O’Brien, the 98th Academy Awards celebrated the year’s most acclaimed films and performances. Among the leading contenders were Sinners, Hamnet, One Battle After Another, Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value.
The race itself was anything but straightforward. A run of surprise wins throughout awards season had thrown several major categories wide open, leaving even presumed frontrunners looking less certain.
Timothée Chalamet, nominated for Marty Supreme, found himself unexpectedly pulled into the pre-Oscars discourse after comments about the future of cinema sparked backlash.
In discussing how the industry might keep audiences engaged, the actor remarked: “I don’t want to do ballet or opera, or, you know, things where we’re like, ‘Hey, let’s keep this alive, even though nobody cares about it anymore.’”
The remarks were widely criticised by performers and fans alike, prompting headlines suggesting the actor may have dented his own awards chances.
Controversies aside, however, the ceremony’s first spectacle arrived before any trophies were handed out: the red carpet.
As the final stop on the awards-season circuit, the Oscars have long served as the moment when Hollywood’s biggest stars unveil their most considered fashion statements, stepping onto the carpet in looks destined to be dissected, debated and ultimately folded into the archive of red-carpet history.
It is also the most formal night on the calendar. The traditional white-tie dress code calls for tuxedos and sweeping evening gowns, though in practice the rules are rarely followed to the letter.
Nicole Kidman was among the evening’s strongest contenders for best dressed, stepping out in a textural powder-pink Chanel gown by Matthieu Blazy paired with Chanel High Jewellery, while Anne Hathaway looked radiant in Valentino complemented by Bvlgari jewels.
This year’s arrivals also included nominees Emma Stone, Rose Byrne, Jessie Buckley, Renate Reinsve and Kate Hudson, alongside Timothée Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan, Wagner Moura and Ethan Hawke.
A handful of unexpected appearances away from the red carpet also kept viewers on their toes, including Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Kylie Jenner in Schiaparelli, who has notably sidestepped the carpet throughout the season.
As Hollywood’s biggest names arrived, the 2026 Oscars red carpet quickly delivered its share of memorable looks.
