In 1915, Gabrielle Chanel opened her first couture house outside of Paris at the Villa de Larralde in Biarritz, a fashionable seaside enclave where aristocrats, artists and holidaymakers converged.

More than a century later, the collection inspired by that same stretch of coastline is bound for another city defined by its relationship to the sea: Sydney.

Chanel has announced it will bring its Resort 2027 collection to Sydney on November 5, marking the first time a French luxury house has staged a runway show of this kind in Australia.

The presentation, which reimagines the collection first unveiled in Biarritz in April, will place Sydney firmly on the international fashion calendar while underscoring the growing significance of the Australian market to one of luxury’s most influential maisons.

The choice of Sydney is particularly fitting for Matthieu Blazy’s debut Cruise collection for the house. Inspired by the coastal elegance of Biarritz, where Gabrielle Chanel refined a new vision of modern dress, the collection explores themes of escape, leisure and possibility.

Marine motifs, nautical stripes, swim caps and breezy silhouettes drew heavily on seaside living. Seashells adorned the ears, while sea anemones and other aquatic forms bloomed across intricate braiding and embroidery. Together, they evoked the romance of life by the water, making Sydney’s harbour, surf culture and outdoor lifestyle a natural extension of the collection’s vision.

“The choice of Sydney for the House’s first runway show in Australia resonates with the spirit of the Cruise collection, which is resolutely focused on movement and an elsewhere,” Chanel said in a statement.

The announcement arrives at a significant moment for the house. Since appointing Matthieu Blazy as artistic director in late 2024, Chanel has entered a new creative chapter, with the designer’s fresh interpretation of house codes helping to reignite excitement around the brand.

The Sydney presentation also reflects Chanel’s growing investment in Australia. In 2025, the house opened its largest Australian boutique, a 1,000-square-metre flagship in Sydney’s historic former David Jones building on Market Street.

“We feel that it’s time now for Chanel to accelerate our development in Australia,” Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Fashion at Chanel, said of the decision.

The relationship between Chanel and Australia extends far beyond retail. In recent years, the house has increasingly embraced Australian talent, from ambassadors Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi to First Nations models Tatyana Perry and Latahlia Hickling, both of whom have walked for the house in Paris.

Earlier this year, Robbie starred in Chanel’s campaign for the Chanel 25 bag alongside a surprise cameo from Kylie Minogue, while Elordi was unveiled as the face of the brand’s men’s fragrance line.

The house has also continued its longstanding relationship with Australian creative figures, including filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, who famously directed Nicole Kidman in Chanel No. 5’s landmark 2004 campaign.

While the venue has yet to be revealed, the arrival of Chanel’s Resort 2027 collection will position Sydney among the select cities to host one of fashion’s most influential travelling spectacles.
