Viewers watched on (read: cringed) as Abbie seemingly started the scenes, which saw the two rolling around in the ocean and her declaring “I’m horny”. But, new details have emerged which seem to suggest the narrative wasn’t as it seemed.

New reports suggest the Network 10 producers heavily edited the scene to portray Abbie as the more sexually promiscuous of the two when in reality, the astrophysicist was equally as keen to go ahead. According to the Mail Online, Matt was actually the first to suggest that he wanted to have sex with the 23-year-old, but his side of the conversation did not make it to our screens. It is believed the producers intentionally wiped his remarks in an attempt to reinforce her controversial portrayal. Basically, it was a clever tactic to make her look far more interested in the 32-year-old than he was in her.
Since that scene went to air, Abbie has confessed to being mercilessly slut-shamed online.
“There have been other comments I’ve seen on my Instagram and on Facebook saying ‘Is she really that easy?’ [and] slut-shaming,” the fan favourite property analyst said. “I have a right to share a consensual kiss with a man I’m attracted to, to own my own sexuality and be confident and happy in myself.”
“People assume women can only be one thing; that because I was open with my sexuality and I was able to express that with Matt that I was only that one thing, that I couldn’t be intelligent and sexual and strong and funny and have any other personality traits,” she said.
The comments got so bad that The Project host Lisa Wilkinson shared her opinion. Under a photo posted to her Instagram page with Matt and this year’s winner Chelsie, Lisa replied to a troll, saying, “Whatever you think of these shows, no-one deserves the next-level nastiness, the threats of violence, the vicious pile-on, and the mean girls mentality that has gone on around her— both on and off the show— just because she decided to run her own race.”
“She found him— and he clearly found her— sexually attractive. That was caught on camera but judging her, and not him, for taking part in that…is an attitude that belongs to the 1950s. Abbie is, clearly, heartbroken, and not the tough cookie she tried to portray in that final episode, so let’s all be mindful of that, at the very least.”
