The 2025 Grammys proved to be a record-breaking year for women in music. The awards ceremony has seen a dramatic shift in recent years when it comes to acknowledging and celebrating the incredible work of female artists.

Back in 2018, comments made by Neil Portnow—president of the Recording Academy which is responsible for organizing the Grammy Awards—in response to a question about a lack of female nominees that year (just 17 out of 86 gongs awarded to women), were disappointing to say the least.

“It has to begin with women,” he said, before adding that female artists needed to “step up.” Since then, Portnow has stepped down, the judging body has been reorganised to include a more diverse portfolio of voters and the number of women not only nominated but awarded golden gramophones increased.

In 2024, every televised award—a portion are handed out prior to the red carpet—went to female artists.

In the past year women have continued to dominate the industry and were, more so than ever, uncompromising in their values and approach.

There was Beyonce’s genre-breaking Cowboy Carter, which she won both Best Country Album and Album of the Year for before telling the audience that “genre is a cold word to keep us in our place as artists”.

Chappell Roan, who won Best New Artists, used her time on the red carpet to advocate for trans community post-Trump election before calling out the music industry over their lack of care for young artists. Then, came 26-year-old Doechii who became the third woman ever to win Rap Album of the Year.

Overall, women won the 2025 Grammys, dominating major awards categories, pushing the boundaries of the industry and taking a stand for their values and others.Women Made History At The 2025 Grammys, Once Again
