Wedding bells will soon be ringing for Matildas team captain Sam Kerr.
The star soccer player is officially set to marry her longtime partner Kristie Mewis, with the latter confirming the engagement to People in mid-November 2023.
Mewis explained that Kerr is “everything” to her. “My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain all, all of my crazy antics,” Mewis said.
Soon after the comments went public, Kerr took to her Instagram to share snaps of the proposal, which appeared to take place in a kind of historic palazzo. She shared the date of their engagement too: September 1, 2023.
The photos are just further confirmation of what fans already suspected, after Mewis was spotted wearing the oval diamond ring.
The ‘rock’ was first spotted a video shared by New York-based football club Gotham, where Kristie plays.
She was spotted sporting the engagement ring on her left hand. Naturally, fans were quick to spot the sizable jewellery, leaving comments like, “Everyone just watching Kristie’s left hand this whole video,” and, “Girl casually wore an engagement ring and thought we wouldn’t notice.”
The engagement news comes just a few weeks after the couple last posted to social media, while celebrating Sam’s 30th birthday.
In an adorable series of snaps shared to Instagram, they could be seen getting cosy on a boat, enjoying birthday cupcakes, and sipping a beverage by the water.
Their football schedules and positions on different teams mean Sam and Kristie maintain a long distance relationship for much of the season, with Sam residing in London as a member of Chelsea FC.
However despite their different home bases, eager-eyed fans noticed that Sam has appeared in New York recently, Krsitie’s home base, after posting an image of a rainy skyline to her Instagram story.
In 2022, the now-engaged couple told GAFFER about making their romance work long-distance.
“It is difficult, of course, just being away from each other but we have FaceTime,” Mewis said, adding, “being in New York is really good because I can kind of just pop over if I get two days off.”
Kerr explained, “I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see an end point. We both just want each other to do so well in our careers. I don’t think you could be in a long-distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport. She fully gets it and I get it. So we just support each other.”
She added that the couple have set “little milestones” to make the romance work. Could putting a ring on it be one of those?
The pair have been linked since the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, when Kristie was seen comforting Sam after the Matildas suffered a loss.
They went public with their relationship soon after, and have since developed a legion of devoted followers, supporting the players both on and off the football field.
