“Everyone in the office is laughing at me because I basically think this might be the most perfect film ever made. Sure, it’s super dated, extremely hetero-normative and very, very white (a valid and oft-levied criticism of Nora Ephron films, when Meg Ryan yells “that caviar is a garnish!” at Tom Hanks in this movie, it’s probably the whitest thing a character has ever said onscreen). But I love this movie. I love it. I can’t help it, it’s a picture-perfect representation of New York, the kind that doesn’t exist anymore, big brownstones and eating bagels standing up at the counter, and romances carried out in tiny, independent bookstores. And Tom Hanks is just perfect as Joe Fox (F.O.X) in this movie, an unscrupulous big business money man who falls for the quirky bookworm via email dating. Like Sleepless in Seattle, there’s not a lot this movie won’t solve. Also, sidebar, listening to Tom talking about Nora Ephron among other things in a special, bumper edition of Desert Island Discs made my entire year.”
